Gwynn Harrison, former head coach at James Madison University and eight-time Division III national champion as an athlete/assistant coach, was announced as Bridgewater's new head women's swimming coach for the 2016-17 season.
She was named the head coach of the new men's swimming program as well, ahead of the 2017-18 season.Â
In the 2024-25 season he women's team finished with a 7-1 record and the men's team finished with a 7-0 record. The Eagles made it to the ODAC Championships where the women's team placed fifth overall and the men's team placed fourth overall. The women's team had one First Team All-ODAC selection. The women's team ended the season with four swimmers selected for the CSC Academic All-District list as well. The men's side saw their first NCAA Qualifier in program history as Zachary Erb went on to earn All-American status with a third place finished in the 100 yd. Breast. The men's team had six swimmers selected for the All-ODAC teams. Both Christian Carroll and Zachary Erb earned First Team All-ODAC, along with Erb who was awarded ODAC Swimmer of the Meet and Carroll who was awarded Rookie of the Meet. The men's team had one swimmer who was selected for the CSC Acadmeic All-District list and two swimmers selected for the VaSID FIrst Team All-State.Â
During the 2022-23 season, Harrison earned ODACÂ Coach of the Year VaSIDÂ Men's Coach of the Year. The men's team placed fourth in the ODAC Championship. The men earned four All-ODAC selections which included two first team (Andrea Cibrario, Luke Wintersgill) and two third team (Ean Helmlinger and Kris Schultz) while the women's team included two third team selections (Isabelle Bauer, Katelyn Wiglesworth).
Both teams equaled or surpassed their best-ever conference finish in 2020-21, placing third at ODACs. The women earned their first two All-State selections (Jessica Touve, Katelyn Wiglesworth) and had a program-high six All-ODAC swimmers, and two freshmen made the men's All-ODAC team (Cullen Beach, Luke Wintersgill).
The Bridgewater women set a new mark for dual meet victories in 2019-20, going 11-5 before a fifth place finish at ODACs. Olivia Heeb-Wade and freshman Ryan Cunningham were both named to the All-ODAC team.
Bridgewater had three All-ODAC selections in 2018-19, including the program's first men's honoree in freshman Austin Bacon. Kelley Hilliker and Olivia Heeb-Wade earned All-ODAC recognition in leading BC to a fourth place finish at the conference meet.
The women had their best season ever in 2017-18, setting a new dual meet mark for victories with a 10-1 record. The team placed third at ODACs, equaling their best-ever finish, and had three All-ODAC selections. The men competed in their first varsity season, winning two dual meets and placing eighth at the conference meet.
In her first season with the Eagles, the team went 6-1 including a dual meet upset of Emory & Henry. Bridgewater set 19 school records, including 10 individual marks by freshman Emma Daw. Both Daw and sophomore Kelley Hilliker were second team All-ODAC.
Harrison was the head women's coach at James Madison for four seasons from 1999 through 2002. She led the Dukes to a Colonial Athletic Conference championship in 2001 and three runner-up finishes and earned CAA Coach of the Year honors in 2000 and 2001.
Harrison swam at Kenyon College, where the Ladies won the NCAA Division III national championship in all four of her seasons with the team (1991-94). A team captain, she earned All-American honors in eight events and was All-Conference in 12 events over that time.
She was later an assistant swimming and diving coach at Kenyon for the 1997 and 1998 seasons with both the men's and women's programs winning consecutive national titles.
After graduating, Harrison was a graduate assistant coach at Bethany College while pursuing a master's degree at West Virginia University.
Most recently, Harrison has worked as a Corporate Wellness Coordinator at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg since 2006. Her main concentrations include wellness lectures, screenings, CPR contractor and corporate partnerships, along with directing group fitness classes, swimming lessons and home fitness programs at Bridgewater Retirement Community.
She has worked with the aquatics or lifeguard programs at numerous locations including Massanutten Resort, ACAC Fitness Center in Charlottesville and New Albany Country Club in Ohio.
Harrison also played volleyball at Kenyon where she was a team captain, team MVP and first team All-NCAC selection, and was an assistant volleyball coach during her time at Kenyon and Bethany.
She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Kenyon and a master's in physical education- teacher education from West Virginia. She is a member of her high school (Granville H.S. in Granville, Ohio) athletic Hall of Fame.
