Men's Soccer Falls In Home Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's soccer team dropped their first match of the season against Johnson & Wales 1-0 Friday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • In the opening minutes of the match, Bridgewater saw an early opportunity to jump to a quick lead. A shot from forward Trey Widrick was on target but was stopped by JWU goalie Cooper Jason. In the fourth minute, Widrick committed a foul on JWU's Seguin in the box, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity. Seguin was able to fake out Eagles keeper Davis Bashore for the lone goal of the contest.
  • In the following minutes, Widrick, Dunbar, and Locklear each had opportunities at leveling the score, but none of their shots were able to find the back of the net. In the 37th minute, Anthony Medrano had a shot opportunity that found the mitts of the Wildcats goalie. They were awarded their final of seven corner kicks in the half and could not capitalize.
  • The game got physical in the opening minutes of the second half. In the first ten minutes of the half, a yellow card and three fouls were issued. JWU had their lone shot on target of the half in the 54th minute, but it was stopped by Bashore. In the 64th minute, Widrick was inches away from tying the score, but he was blocked by the crossbar.
  • In the closing minutes of the match, Leo Vasquez, Widrick, and Medrano each got attempts at equalizing the match, but were unable to put their shots on target.

Match Notes
  • Freshman Davis Bashore made his first career start and played all 90 minutes between the pipes for BC. He was able to make three saves and only conceded the penalty shot in the fourth minute of the match.
  • The penalty shot in the fourth minute was the first score of the season for JWU.
  • Despite the final score, the Eagles won the shot category. With 17 shots in the game, they more than doubled the number of shots that JWU took (8). Despite this disparity, Bridgewater only had five shots on target, all saved by the JWU keeper. JWU had four shots on goal and capitalized on one.
  • There was also a difference in the corner kicks statistic. Bridgewater had seven of their nine corner opportunities in the first half, while Johnson & Wales had two in the entire match, both coming in the second half.
  • The match was a physical one. 22 fouls were committed in the match (11 apiece), and two yellow cards were issued.

What's Next
  • The Eagles will have minimal resting time as they will face John Jay at home on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. The match will be streamed on FloCollege.
