Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Takes Two at Home Quad Match Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College women's volleyball swept the day in the quad match tournament for the first home appearance of the season Saturday, defeating Pfeiffer and Greensboro in straight sets.

The Eagles swept in three sets against Pfeiffer and Greensboro Saturday.

The Basics

Score:

Game 1: Bridgewater (BCE) 3, Pfeiffer (PFU) 0

Game 2: Bridgewater (BCE) 3, Greensboro (GC) 0

Records: BCE (7-3); PFU (2-6), GC (5-2)

How It Happened

Game 1

  • The Eagles did not wait. They pressed hard and fast, going on an early 4-0 start in the first set. With back-to-back kills from Agnes Alford, BCE extended the lead at 8-1. The Falcons pulled together set plays, but BCE forced them into mistakes resulting in a comfortable 25-16 first set score.

  • In the second set, BCE handled the offensive attack by PFU effectively while working with an early 3-0 advantage. The Crimson & Gold continued to find its spot with the help of well-executed attacks by Faith DePew, Claire Griffith, and Reagan Stoop. The second set went to the Eagles at 25-22 following a definitive kill by Alford.

  • BCE gave themselves some breathing room once more in the third set, launching to a five-point scoring rally to make it 18-11. A second dominant scoring streak occurred while completely stepping on the gas pushing the score up to 23-13 with a Griffith smack-down. The Eagles won the third set, 25-15.

Game 2

  • Although working from behind early in the match, the Eagles took care of business in the second match of the day against GC. In the first set, BCE recovered from a 10-4 deficit with the help of multiple scoring bursts halfway in the set and then a quick boost of momentum to launch into a six-point scoring rally to close the first set at 25-21.

  • GC had trouble weathering the multiple scoring runs that the Eagles powered through on. A dominant four-point streak helped set the stage for the second set as Reagan Stoop got a piece one to slam down yet another kill of 14 total. A massive six-point rally ensued as Gabby Atwell began the scoring offensive barrage making it 21-11. The Eagles finished the set with ease at 25-14.

  • Despite a couple slower than usual starts in the first two sets, BCE got the offense rolling after the very first point. BCE enlarged the lead early at 4-1 and then carried with the lead the rest of the way. GC had no answer for the potent offense and the Stoop attack. Erin Harris and company ended the match in three sets with a 25-15 final set score.

Match Notes

Game 1

  • Sophomore Agnes Alford led the way for the Eagles with 10 kills. Alford is up to 48 kills on the season while improving on the six in her first year, respectively. Alford also stacked up the blocks with three rejections against the Falcons.

  • Bridgewater maintained a strong hitting percentage with a .433 percentage while limiting Pfeiffer to a .152 percentage.

  • The Eagles dominated right out of the gate, collecting 16 kills to PFU's six, respectively.

Game 2

  • Bridgewater clipped Greensboro in nearly every offensive stat category while also posting 41 kills to GC's 26.

  • The Eagles gave the Pride some tough looks and Greensboro was limited in effective hitting percentage, while showing a -.033 hitting percentage in the third set.

  • Junior Reagan Stoop led the way in the match with 14 kills. Stoop is 12 kills away from hitting the 1,000 career kills mark with an additional 23 kills from her previous 965 kills before Saturday's matches.
