BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team took a pair of games from Shenandoah on Tuesday afternoon.
GAME 1
The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 8, Shenandoah 0 (6 innings)
Records: Bridgewater 25-12 (15-4 ODAC); Shenandoah 17-18 (10-9 ODAC)
How It Happened
- Mackenzie Cauthorn got the nod in game one for BC, and she made quick work of the Hornets in the top of the first. Both teams got their first hits of the contest in the second frame, but neither team scratched a run across.
- Shenandoah had a runner in scoring position in the top of the third, but she was thrown out trying to steal third. BC responded in the bottom of the frame as Abby Byrum led off with a double to the wall in left center. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Jordan Wise delivered with a single the opposite way to drive her in and make it 1-0. The Eagles weren't done there as Caroline Malandra doubled to put two runners in scoring position. SU made a pitching change, but Cauthorn followed with a single to allow Wise to score, but Malandra was put out on the play. BC tagged on a third run as Jazmyne Smith shot a rocket down the left field line to bring in Cauthorn and make it 3-0.
- Malandra helped BC add on in the bottom of the fourth as she doubled to left field to drive in Byrum to make it 4-0. Shenandoah had a chance to get on the board in the top of the fifth, but the Hornets left the bases jammed.
- The Eagles took over in the bottom of the sixth as Hannah Mahan. walked to open the frame. Byrum reached on an error, and Mahan scurried around the bags and scored on the play to make it 5-0. BC loaded the bases with a pair of walks after Byrum's bunt. McKenna Mueller walked to score Byrum and Smith stepped in next and delivered with a two-run single to make it 8-0 and conclude the game via the run rule.
Match Notes
- Cauthorn (13-5) picked up the victory in game one after going the distance and striking out six with two hits. Smith went 3-for-4 at the dish with three RBI to lead the charge. Wise and Malandra also tallied multiple hits in the nine-hit effort.
- Gaskins (6-5) took the loss for the Hornets after going the opening 2.1 innings and allowing three earned runs. SU was limited to just two hits as McQueeney was the only Hornet to reach twice.
GAME 2

Score: Bridgewater 8, Shenandoah 0
Records: Bridgewater 26-12 (16-4 ODAC); Shenandoah 17-19 (10-10 ODAC)
How It Happened
- Malandra opened game two with a base hit for the Eagles in the bottom of the first, and she worked her way around to third, but she was left stranded. Wise singled through the right side in the second, but she was also left stranded.
- SU put a runner on in the top of the third and worked the runner around to third, but a strikeout by Evelyn Rhodes in the circle ended the chance. Both teams went down in order following the stranded runner.
- Bridgewater got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Mueller and Smith had identical screamers down the left field line for doubles, as Mueller scored to make it 1-0. BC loaded the bases after a Mahan infield hit, and Wise followed with a groundout to drive in a run. Byrum followed with a base knock to drive in Lexi Schaaf, and a Kaelyn Ramsey single made it 4-0 as Mahan scored. BC put on the double steal later in the inning as Ramsey took second and Byrum was safe at the plate after the short throw to second to make it 5-0.
- Shenandoah went down in order in the top of the fifth and BC pounced. Mueller opened the home half of the fifth and stole second right away. Smith walked as well, and a bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Mahan walked to load the bases, and a Wise single pushed Mueller across. Byrum and Malndra followed with walks with the bases loaded to drive in another pair of runs to make it 8-0 and end the game via the run rule again.
Match Notes
- Rhoads (8-3) picked up the win for the Eagles after going the distance and allowing just one hit and striking out four. Wise and Byrum each drove in a pair of runs, and Wise was the only Eagle with multiple base hits in game two.
- Rieg (2-4) took the loss in the circle for SU in game two after tossing the opening 3.1 innings and allowing five earned runs. Medellin picked up the only hit for the Hornets in game two.
