VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team split a pair of games with No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan

GAME 1

Score:
 No. 5 Va. Wesleyan 4; Bridgewater 1
Records: Bridgewater 23-12 (13-4 ODAC); No. 5 Va. Wesleyan 31-1-1 (17-0 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater put a runner on in the top of the first as Mackenzie Cauthorn singled with one gone, but a fielder's choice ended the threat. Evelyn Rhoads got the call in the circle in game one for BC and answered the bell to start, as she did not surrender a base runner in the opening frame.
  • BC struck first in the top of the second as Jazmyne Smith singled to open the frame. Andrea Savage followed with a base knock an out later, and Sarah Kate Tozier came in to run for Smith. Abby Byrum got tagged by a pitch to load the bases, and Aniella Baldwin followed with a walk to push Tozier in easily and make it 1-0. BC left the bases loaded after a sharp lineout led to a VWU double play.
  • Rhoads continued to roll until the Marlins opened the bottom of the third with a pair of hits. A bunt moved both runners into scoring position, and a single followed to tie the game. VWU added a sacrifice flyout to take the lead, while an errant throw allowed the home side to stretch the newfound lead to 3-1.
  • Bridgewater went down on strikes in the top of the fourth, but the Marlins stranded a runner in the home half of the frame to keep BC within striking distance. The Eagles had a chance to strike in the top of the fifth as a walk by Baldwin and a single from Caroline Malandra put a pair of runners on with one out. Lauren Bible got the Marlins out of the frame with a pair of flyouts to keep the lead intact.
  • VWU added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a one-out single followed by a triple to make it 4-1. BC was held without a base runner over the final two innings as a strikeout by Bible ended game one in favor of the Marlins.
Match Notes
  • Rhoads (7-3) took the loss for the Eagles. After going the full distance and surrendering three earned runs. BC tallied just four hits in game one as Baldwin was the only Eagle to reach twice with two walks.
  • Bible (18-0) picked up the victory for the Marlins in the circle after allowing a single run and just four hits. Three different hitters registered multi-hit games for the Marlins in game one.
GAME 2
The Basics
Score:
 Bridgewater 5, No. 5 Va. Wesleyan 4 (8 Innings)
Records: Bridgewater 24-12 (14-4 ODAC); No. 5 Va. Wesleyan 31-2-1 (17-1 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Malandra opened game one with a leadoff single, but she was left stranded. VWU looked to pounce early as it loaded the bases on walks and a hit by pitch, but Cauthorn regrouped in the circle and got a punchout and a groundball to end the frame.
  • Both pitchers settled in during the second frame, but VWU still put a runner on with a single with two gone. The Marlins took the lead in the bottom of the third as a double and a single put runners on the corners with no outs. VWU then executed a double steal to make it 1-0, and the runner at first worked her way to third with no outs. Cauthorn regrouped and got out of the frame, but a groundout drove in a second run for the Marlins to make it 2-0 after three complete.
  • Smith doubled in the top of the fourth, but she was left stranded. VWU put a runner on by way of an error in the home half of the frame and loaded the bases as a hit and a walk followed. The Marlins capitalized on an error by the Eagles, allowing a pair of runs to score, and made it 4-0 for the No. 5 team in the NFCA Coaches poll.
  • The Eagles regrouped in the top of the fifth as Lily Moyers and Savage opened the inning with base rips to put runners on second and third with no outs. A walk by Byrum loaded the bases, but a double play got the Marlins out of the jam the following at-bat.
  • Bridgewater fended off a Marlins chance in the bottom of the fifth, and Cauthorn started her own run support with a single in the top of the sixth. Smith followed with a hit, and Kaelyn Ramsey delivered with a single through the left side to drive in Cauthorn and get BC on the board. Moyers followed with a base rip to drive in Smith, and the Eagles were in business. Savage followed with a groundout to push Ramsey in, and the lead was cut down to 4-3 heading to the seventh.
  • Lexi Schaaf pinch hit to open the seventh and drew a walk after Cauthorn and company kept the deficit at just a run. Baldwin came in to run an a Malandra single moved her to third with no outs. Cauthorn stepped in next and delivered as she singled back up the middle to drive in Baldwin and tie the game with no outs. VWU went to the bullpen and got out of the jam, but BC held serve in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
  • Moyers continued to be the spark plug as she singled to open the extra frame, but a bad throw allowed the tie-break runner to score from second and gave the Eagles their first lead of game two. Moyers moved all the way over to third, but she was left stranded. VWU did not go down without a fight in the bottom of the frame as a walk put the go-ahead run on with no outs, but pop-ups to second base and left field put the Marlins down to their final out. A full-count walk loaded the bases, but a groundball to Malandra at second secured the thrilling victory.
Match Notes
  • Cauthorn (12-5) continued her chase at history as she picked up the complete-game victory on 140 pitches. Four different Eagles registered multiple hits in game two, highlighted by three knocks from Moyers. Moyer's eighth inning hit marked the third time this season the go-ahead run has scored with her at the plate.
  • Hearl (2-2) was on the hook for the loss in the relief effort. Myers was the only Marlin with multiple hits in game two.
  • The victory is BC's first over VWU under head coach Megan Pleskovic and the program's second top-five victory under Pleskovic, both of which have come in the Tidewater. BC also defeated VWU for the first time since the 2012 ODAC Tournament.
