Chadwell Sends Two Out, Eagles Soar Past Marymount

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater baseball poured on the offense in late innings led by two home run blasts from Zack Chadwell for a 17-3 win over Marymount at home Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles won 17-3 over Marymount at home.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 17, Marymount (MU) 3

Records: BCE (16-8-1 OVR), MU (13-11)

How It Happened

  • Although the Eagles slipped defensively with four fielding mistakes, BCE recovered well and struck ahead in the fifth and sixth innings. The MU Saints struggled to get runners around home, while the Eagles pounced every chance they could, with runners in scoring position.

  • Nick Stavros got the bat firing early with the first knock on the day as Stavros belted a solo shot over the right field wall. Trent Holland then stepped up to bat with Ashton Smith on base from a hit by pitch and followed suit with Stavros, launching a deep shot over left field to close out the first inning with a 3-0 lead.

  • Starting pitcher Joe Christopher held strong through two innings until MU strung along three runs that were kicked off by a fielding error. The Saints evened the score at three to end the frame.

  • From there on out, Bridgewater's bullpen put together solid innings finding ways to get out of jams in the next four innings. Meanwhile, the Eagles stormed ahead as Chadwell joined the home run party with a two-run moon shot bringing home Stavros in the fifth. Spencer Sigmon then shot one into the infield that caused an error, allowing Lucas Bauer to score in the sequence. Soon after, Andrew Cheatham came around to score on a passed ball and Bryce Suters laced an RBI single to score in Sigmon for the commanding 9-3 lead.

  • In the sixth, the Eagles came back again with continued aggression at the plate. Chadwell was sent home on a wild pitch and Bauer added to the high-octane scoring with a single up the middle, knocking in Smith. More intensity came from BCE's side as Jack Hayes was able to score in Bauer with bases loaded on a walk. Suters then did his job to score in Cheatham with a sac fly and Chadwell found a pitch in the sweet spot sending a deep shot over the right field wall for the grand slam. The Saints had little to counteract the forceful scoring surge by the Eagles and the game was decided after seven innings for a 17-3 win (10-run rule).

Game Notes

  • With the two home runs by Chadwell, the power hitter now has a total of eight homers this season (team high). Chadwell went 2-for-3 on the day with three scored runs, two hits, and six RBIs.

  • Nick Stavros also had a hot bat at the plate again going yard in back-to-back games. Those are the only home runs of the season for Stavros. Stavros closed the strong performance out going 3-for-4 on three runs, three hits, and one RBI.

  • The Saints left 11 men on base while the Eagles only left four, respectively.
