Baseball Snags Win Over Washington & Lee at Home

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater baseball stormed back in later innings to secure a 13-7 win over Washington & Lee at home Wednesday.

The Eagles won 13-7 over Washington & Lee in ODAC action at Bridgewater Baseball Field.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 13, Washington & Lee (WLU) 7

Records: BCE (10-7-1 OVR, 2-2-1 ODAC), WLU (5-8 OVR, 1-7 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • After being down past five innings, the Eagles found their groove in the sixth tying the game up and building the momentum to take the lead back in the seventh inning. The late offensive surge and lock-down bullpen sealed the game for the rest of the way.

  • Although eventually holding on to a steady lead, the Eagles did not start out with the opening break. The Generals strung a pair of hits together in the first inning for an RBI sacrifice fly for the first run of the game. Next inning, WLU made it home on a throwing error attempting to pick off the steal attempt to third but instead squirted past the infield to score in the second run.

  • The Eagles responded well despite the shaky first inning evening the score at two apiece from bases loaded. Bryce Suters pieced one together to earn an RBI single while Bransen Hensley walked to send Spencer Sigmon home. Hensley jumped to second to help bring home Sigmon on the wild pitch. Then, Nick Stavros did the job to extend the lead and to send Lucas Bauer home safely on a sac fly for the 4-2 edge.

  • WLU responded back this time in the third inning with a solo shot over the outfield wall cutting the deficit to one run. Next inning, the Generals found the equalizer with bases loaded walking in a WLU runner. In the next at-bat, WLU regained the lead, singling to left field to knock in another run to make the score, 5-4. The Generals did not let up and drove a pitch through the left side, scoring in two more after the pitching change. Hunter Covill settled after the hit and forced a groundout and a strikeout to retire the end of the fourth inning.

  • WLU managed to hold firmly a strong relief pitching crew to get out of the fourth and fifth innings, but the Eagles took over in the sixth finding comfortable pitches and working their way back offensively. With two outs, Chandler Valbak kept the inning going with a double to right center scoring in Stavros. Smith found the sweet spot off the bat, ripping a shot to left center to reach third and bring home Valbak. Trent Holland put together the tying run lacing a single up the middle for the seventh run.

  • Next inning, the Eagles continued to piece together aggressive at-bats and jumped out to a four-run advantage. A bases clearing double by Smith sent home Stavros, Hensley, and Suters. Next at-bat, Holland brought home Smith with a double to left field. BCE added insurance runs in the eighth with a two-run single by Stavros to help seal the game at 13-7.

Game Notes

  • Bransen Hensley put up a strong offensive performance collecting four hits on five at-bats while tallying an RBI.

  • More offensive gems came from Nick Stavros and Ashton Smith as Stavros posted three hits and three RBIs and Smith posted a four-RBI game.
