Softball Wins Two on Saturday

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday with a victory over Mary Washington and Greensboro.

Game 1
The Basics
Score:
Game 1: Bridgewater 5, Mary Washington 3
Records: Bridgewater 8-3; Mary Washington 4-13
How It Happened
  • A BC error to open the game combined with a triple by Mary Washington put UMW in front 1-0 after the opening half inning. Bridgewater responded in the bottom of the first as a walk by Jordan Wise and a single from McKenna Mueller put runners on. A walk by Leiah Branch loaded the bases, but a foul flyout by Skyler Buzbee left the bases juiced.
  • Elena Williams put UMW down in order in the top of the second including a strikeout and Caroline Malandra opened the home half of the frame with a base knock. Abby Byrum laid down a bunt and some nifty base running moved Malandra all the way to third on the play. The starting third baseman stayed aggressive on the base paths as she scored on a wild pitch to even the score later in the inning.
  • Bridgewater added to the lead in the home half of the third as a single by Wise and a double from Mueller put runners in scoring position. Branch drew another walk and Buzbee did as well with the bases jammed to push Wise across and make it 2-1. Malandra came up next and flew out just deep enough to right to drive Mueller across and make it 3-1.
  • Neither side put a runner on via a base knock following BC's two run frame until a double from Wise opened the bottom of the fifth. Mueller drew a four-pitch walk and Branch gave up her at bat with a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly by Buzbee allowed pinch runner Molly Ecroyd to tag up from third and score to swell the lead.
  • UMW responded in the top of the sixth as a generous hit by pitch put the leadoff runner on. A single followed and put a pair of runners on for the visitors and a sacrifice bunt moved the runners over. More small ball followed for Mary Washington as a sacrifice fly allowed the lead runner to tag-up and score while a single during the next at bat drove in another run to cut the lead down to a run at 4-3. Erica Nelson came in following the RBI single and got BC out of the jam with a soft flyout.
  • Abby Byrum opened the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to left for her first career home run as the insurance run to make it 5-3. Nelson closed things out in the top half of the seventh including a punch out on the way to the save.
Match Notes
  • Wise and Mueller accounted for four of BC's six hits with a pair each. Buzbee drove in a pair of runs although she only logged one at bat. Williams (2-0) picked up the win in the circle allowing two earned runs on four hits over 5.2 innings of work. Nelson closed in on the saves record with her first of the season, not surrendering a hit in 1.1 innings of work.
  • Jester (2-4) took the loss in the circle for UMW after tossing 5.0 innings of work and allowing all five runs earned. UMW tallied four hits with not a single player racking up more than one.
Game 2
Score: Bridgewater 1, Greensboro 0
Records: Bridgewater 9-3; Greensboro 12-6
  • Both teams put runners on in their opening innings at the dish including a Wise double, but all runners were left stranded. Greensboro put a runner on via its second walk of the contest, but a pair of strikeouts from Mckenzie Cauthorn left the Pride's runner stranded.
  • Greensboro had the game's first real chance in the top of third as a walk and some small ball put a runner on third for the Pride. Cauthorn induced a groundout to Mueller at short stop to strand the runner. Aniella Baldwin responded for the Eagles in the home half of the third with a two-out single and advanced to second on a single, but she too was stranded.
  • The Pride left another runner stranded at third in the top of the fifth and BC replied with a pair of two-out hits via a single from Andrea Savage and a double the opposite way from Sarah Kate Tozier, but again the two were left on the base paths.
  • The goose eggs finally fell off the board in the sixth inning. GC grounded out twice to open the inning, but a two-out double to the right field wall kept the inning alive. The Pride followed with a shot to the same exact spot that resulted in a triple to drive across the game's first run. Cauthorn regrouped with a foul flyout to Savage at third to end the frame with BC now trailing.
  • BC replied in its half of the sixth as singles from Wise and Mueller and some aggressive base running put two runners in scoring position for BC. Greensboro made a change in the circle and got the second out of the inning thanks to an infield popup. Lily Moyers pinch hit next, and the freshman delivered with a single to right field to drive in Mueller and the pinch runner Ecroyd to put Bridgewater in front. Moyers advanced to third on a wild pitch and a pinch-hit walk from Kaelyn Ramsey put runners on the corners, but the Pride got out of the jam. Cauthorn came back out for the seventh and did not flinch with a strikeout, flyout and a nice stop in her own right for the final out.
Match Notes
  • Wise led the way for BC offensively with a pair of hits and Moyers two-run single made the difference. Cauthorn (4-1) took the victory after tossing fourth complete game of the season.
  • Hampel (5-1) suffered her first loss of the season in the circle after allowing both earned runs. Connell accounted for two of GC's four hits in the low-scoring contest.
