Women's Hoops Bows Out in ODAC Tournament

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College Women's Basketball fell to the seventh-seeded Ferrum Panthers 63-57 on Tuesday night in the ODAC Quarterfinals.

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater jumped in front with an Alexis Edmonds jumper to open the game. Ferrum made a free throw in response, but a Jay Garcia three-pointer and a Jaden Alsberry layup put BC in front 7-1 over two minutes in. Ferrum scored its first field goal three minutes in, but BC had answers as scores by Alsberry and Edmonds stretched the lead to 11-5. The Panthers put together back-to-back scores to close to within a point, but s score by Riley Corcoran interrupted the FC swing. The away side nailed a three-pointer to tie the game, but long-range makes by Corcoran and Aylin Humpherys along with a make at the charity stripe by the junior from Chapel Hill stretched it 20-13. A Ferrum bucket ended a high-scoring opening frame to make it 20-15 after one.
  • Ferrum opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run and took a 22-20 lead ith 5:35 to go in the half as both defenses locked in. Bridgewater finally got on the board after nearly a six-minute scoring drought stretching back to the first with an Edmonds three-pointer to take the lead back. The teams traded makes and the lead until a nce find by Garcia and a reverse layup by Reagan Maynard put BC in front by three. A Garcia fast-break score stretched the lead to 29-24 with 54 seconds to go in the half and forced an FC timeout. The stoppage worked and a score by the Panthers just before the horn sent it to the half at 29-26 for the higher-seeded Eagles.
  • Corcoran drilled a corner three out of the intermission, but FC answered with an 8-0 run highlighted by five points from Allyson Cassell to take the lead. A Jasmine Griffin bucket leveled the score, but a Panthers make from beyond the arc gave them the lead back. Corcoran and Alsberry combined for scores just over the midway point in the third frame to put BC back in front at 38-37. Another FC three-pointer gave the visitors the lead back, but makes at the free throw line by Maynard and Jaiden Polston gave BC the lead back at 41-40 heading to the fourth. 
  • BC held onto the lead after an exchange of scores and an Aumtn Gentry deep make put them ahead by three with 7:31 to play. Ferrum responded with an 8-2 run capped off by an Aisha Martin three-pointe to take a 52-49 lead with 5:32 on the clock. A bucket by Alsberry and a make at the charity stripe by Polston allowed BC to tie the game ad got the crowd back into it. Three-straight points by Ferrum swelled the lead to three, but an Alsberry bucket off of a deflected pass sliced the lead to just a point. Ferrum came up with the dagger as layup late the in the shot clock and another score moved the lead to 59-54 with 1:19 to play. Griffin found the clutch gene on BC's following trip down the floor as she drained a three-pointer from the wing to cut the lead to two. The Eagles got a stop and a board from Polston and too a timeout in the offensive end with 15 seconds to play. BC drew up a play but a miscue on a hand off saw the ball roll into the bleachers and gave Ferrum the ball back with the lead and just eight seconds on the clock. The Panthers made free throws over the closing seconds to seal the victory.
Match Notes
  • The Eagles led nine times, but held their last lead with 6:13 to play. Corcoran led the Eagles with 15 points, four assists and three steals. Polston led BC on the glass with eight rebounds.
  • The difference maker for Ferrum was Cassell. The junior tallied 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. 
  • BC had one of their best days from beyond the arc all season as it shot 43.8% from deep on the night, but the problem was Ferrum shot 41.2% rom deep and was 51.2% from the floor in total. The Panthers also scored 30 points in the paint and had been held to under 10 points from inside in both of their prior matchups against the Eagles this season.
