BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The fourth seeded Bridgewater College women's soccer team took down No. 5 Randolph-Macon 5-1 in the first round of the ODAC women's soccer tournament.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater 5, Randolph-Macon 1

Records: Bridgewater (9-8-2, 7-3 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (15-4, 7-3 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater took control of the match early, recording two quick shot attempts. Cassandra Villafan and Lyric Birkley both had shots early, but both were off the mark. In the sixth minute, the Bridgewater defense was tested early when RMC had their first shot attempt of the match. It was on target, but it was stopped by Erinn Lockard

  • The Yellow Jackets struck first off a fastbreak opportunity. RMC's Jackie Wenzlik found Ariel Farmer, who was able to pass Lockard for the first tally of the match.

  • Bridgewater immediately went to work on the offensive end. Laura Narby and Birkley recorded shot attempts of their own soon after, with Birkley putting the first shot on goal for the Eagles. The shot was stopped, but it led to a set piece opportunity for BC. The corner kick led to another Birkley shot attempt, but the Eagles were unable to get on the board.

  • The Eagles scored their first goal of the match in the 14th minute. Kendall Garza sent a pass across to Sophia Phillips. Phillips faked out the RMC keeper to even the score.

  • After getting on the board, Bridgewater kept searching for their potential winning goal. Garza and Belan each put shots on target that were saved by RMC keeper Erin Morris.

  • In the 26th minute, the Eagles scored on a Birkley-Narby connection on a set piece. Birkley threw a pass into the box. The pass missed a crowd of black and white jerseys and bounced to Narby. Narby redirected the ball into the back of the net with a header for the game winning goal.

  • The Yellow Jackets mustered a couple shot attempts, but both were off the mark. Birkley added a couple shot attempts of their own, but both sailed over the goal post.

  • Just before the 30 minute mark, Brianna Curro drove the ball down the left side of the field and found a cutting Garza. She sent a lead pass into the box, leading to Garza tapping the pass into the goal for the third goal of the match.

  • The final minutes of the first half brought physical play and tests for the Bridgewater defense. The Yellow Jackets put three shots on target in the final twenty minutes of the half, but were unable to score.

  • In the 62nd minute, Villafan ripped a shot from range after receiving a pass from Birkley. The shot lasered over the reach of RMC's keeper and found nylon.

  • The Eagles kept their foot on the gas pedal despite the comfortable lead, as Garza, Birkley, and Farally each ripped shots.

  • Curro scored the fifth goal of the match for the Eagles off an assist from Phillips. Phillips dished a pass to Curro, who was on the left side of the box. Curro took a difficult shot and found the back of the net.
