How It Happened
-
The attack errors and uncapitalized points set back the Bridgewater Eagles. Even though it was a defeat, the Eagles battled while leading with an opening set advantage. In the first set, BCE started out slow with a two-point deficit but quickly measured up and took the lead while not giving up the lead at all the rest of the set. A massive nine-point scoring rally for the Eagles gave them firm control while attacking crew, Gabby Atwell, Maya Veselinovic, and Claire Griffith had a hand in the scoring run. The Eagles nailed the first set, 25-18.
-
Then, Guilford came out ready to battle. The Quakers went on a five-point run early in the set to give them a solid 8-4 edge. The Eagles found ways to sneak back up in the score, but Guilford remained unfazed throughout the set. Rebecca Huddleston came in and landed a kill to light the Bridgewater offense back up; however, GC took the second set, 25-17.
-
In the third set, the Eagles held control of the momentum for much of the early points while enlarging the lead to 9-4 with an Atwell service ace. The Quakers returned the favor with a strong five-point effort and diminished the lead. The Quakers tied it up at 18 apiece and jumped ahead to take the third set, 25-21.
-
The Eagles once again started the set off with an early lead, but GC hustled through long rallies to make up ground and charge back into the set. In the fourth set, the Quakers began to take command off a three-point run to make it 12-10 GC. The Eagles quickly snuffed out the lead to tie it at 12 and go up by four points with the help of a DePew smack down. GC answered with a five-point run to hold a 20-17 lead. BCE then made a late charge with a four-point run to take the lead back at 21-20. BCE worked their way to set point, but the Quakers never gave up. GC took the fourth set, 30-28.
