Men's Golf Finishes Second at The Melee

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College Men's golf team was back in action on Monday for the second round of the Melee at Ford's Colony Country Club. After a solid start on Monday the Eagles maintained second place to come home with a runner up finish shooting a two-day total of 585 (292-293).

"It's good to see us yet again fighting at the top of tournaments, especially this week competing against a bunch of top 50 teams," said head coach Nick Schlickenrieder. "All of our hard work in practice has paid off and it's been reflected in the results this fall."

The Eagles were led throughout the tournament by sophomore Walker Gillespie who came home to finish third after shooting 71-70 the last two days. Gillespie played incredibly consistent all weekend with only four bogeys to his name in the entire tournament.

Senior Brandon Washburn came in as the second counting score for the Eagles for a second day in a row, carding a 1-over par 72 to finish tied for sixth. Washburn faced ball striking miscues but was able to play consistently throughout and added three birdies to his card to counter four bogies.

Junior Jayden Hendricks had another solid day firing a 74 to shoot the same score as Sundays round. Again, the transfer showed a solid performance as he came in a tie for 12th place in the field of 60 golfers.

Freshman Jackson Baugher came in with the fourth score for the Eagles on Monday, carding a 77 to finish in a tie for 26th.

Sophomore Cai Clark was the drop score for the Eagles on Monday as he came in with a score of 80 to finish in a tie for 32nd.

Christopher Newport captured the tournament win, shooting a two-day total of 579. The medalist was Ryan Henneman from Salisbury with a score of 138.

The Eagles will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday, where they will face stiff competition at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro, N.C.
