Widrick's Big Day Leads Men's Soccer Past Linfield

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team cruised past Linfield 6-1 on Saturday evening.

The Basics

Final Score: Bridgewater 6, Linfield 1
Records: Bridgewater 1-1-2, Linfield 1-2-0

How It Happened
  • Linfield opened the game on the offensive as Charles Schweinefuss had to make a pair of diving stops in the opening 10 minutes. After a pair of empty corner kicks by the Wildcats, BC flipped the field and Gavin Kast found Trey Widrick open in front and the sophomore fired his shot home to get the Eagles on the board in the 15th minute.
  • BC wasted no time in padding the led as Widrick sent a ball across the box in the 21st minute that glazed off of Alex Raudales and found the boot of Riley Queen who buried the shot to make it 2-0. The Eagles kept their foot down with a pair of shots in the 26th minute leading to a corner kick. Off of the attempt, Zach Jarvis scooped up the loose change and fired his shot to the back of the net just over the 27-minute mark to make it 3-0. Linfield was able to try and stop the momentum as pressure in the BC defensive end led to miscommunication. A failed BC clear deflected off of one of the Eagles and went into the bac of the net to get the Wildcats on the board before the break.
  • Widrick had a chance to add to his point tally in the opening five minutes of the second half as he took a penalty kick off of a Linfield handball. Widrick's shot was saved by Jacob Toves in goal for Linfield, but Gavin Kast found the loose change in front and found the back of the net to put the Eagles in front 4-1.
  • The pace slowed down momentarily until a shot by Dicarlo Peredo-Torrico was turned away by Toves. A failed Linfield clear off the ensuing corner kick saw Justin Scott lay a pass on for Colin Tibbs and the rookie buried it into the far side of the net to make it 5-1. Raudales rounded out the scoring as his tally in the 72nd minute made it 6-1. Will Flores and Leo Vasquez each had chances late that did not find nylon.
Match Notes
  • BC saw contributions from all over the roster, but Widrick's goal and two assists stood out for the victors.
  • Four different Eagles had multiple shots in the game including multiple shots on target by Kast, Widrick and Tibbs.
  • Toves mad five stops in net for the Wildcats while Schweinefuss made just two on the two shots he faced.
  • BC dominated the team stats including a 10-3 edge in corner kicks and a 11-2 advantage in shots on goal.
