GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Bridgewater College women's volleyball team split its two matches on Saturday in day two of the Battlefield Classic on Saturday.
Match One:
Final Score: Messiah 3, Bridgewater 0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-20)
Records: Bridgewater 1-2; Messiah 2-1
How it Happened:
- Bridgewater hopped out in front to a 5-1 advantage on the back of a pair of kills from Reagan Stoop to open the match. Messiah was able to close back in to within a point at 12-11 before a five-point swing by the Eagles put BC ahead at 17-11. MU closed back in slowly before the Eagles earned a trio of set points after a Stoop ace. Messiah fended off the three opportunities and a pair of Cassidy Dell aces gave the squad from Pennsylvania the opening set at 26-24.
- Messiah jumped out to a 9-3 advantage in set two and never looked back. BC was able to close back in to a four-point deficit at 16-20 before MU stormed away with five of the last six points of the frame to take a two-set lead after a 25-17 win in the second stanza.
- BC stepped head early in the third set after a kill from Gabby Atwell and another Stoop ace gave the squad an early 4-2 advantage. The two sides traded the lead throughout much of the set as Bridgewater jumped head at 17-16 after a Rachael Meyers kill. MU slowly pulled away and did not look back as they stormed away with nine of the match's final 12 points to secure the straight-set victory.
Match Stats:
- Stoop led BC offensively with 11 kills and tallied 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Atwell was right behind her with nine kills of her own while swinging an effective .429 percent.
- Faith Shields and Ashley Rutherford each crossed the 15-assist plateau with 16 and 18 helpers respectively. Rutherford also led BC with 16 digs.
- MU's Chayney Barnhart and Leah Youtzy tossed in 10 kills each in the win.
- Messiah held an advantage in almost every statistical category including a healthy 11-3 edge in service aces.
Match Two:
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Gallaudet 1 (18-25, 25-14, 25-23, 28-26)
Records: Bridgewater 2-2, Gallaudet 2-1
How it Happened:
- The Bison stepped on the gas from the get-go as a quick 8-1 lead prompted a Bridgewater timeout. Out of the stoppage the Eagles rallied off five points in a row led by a pair of kills from stoop with some help from Atwell and Brooklyn Williams as well. GU regrouped and worked back out to a 20-13 advantage before the sides traded points to the end of the set with Gallaudet taking the opening frame 25-18.
- BC was able to take control in the opening points of the second set as a block from Williams and Meyers polished off a 3-0 Eagles' lead. A Julia Bellis service ace was able to psuh the advantage to 7-3 before the two sides traded points for an entire service rotation and the Eagles stepped ahead at 14-9. BC rode the wave and led by as much as 18-11 after a Stoop kill before a small Bison run. BC closed the set on a 7-1 run as an Atwell ace polished off the frame at 25-14.
- Gallaudet took a 4-2 advantage to open set three before an eight-point Eagle run capped off by another Stoop kill made it 10-4. GU slowly closed back in to 19-17, but a service error by the Bison and a Claire Griffith kill helped give BC a 22-17 edge. GU was able to fight off three match points, but another GU service error gave the Eagles the set at 25-23.
- The fourth set opened with the two sides trading punches before Gallaudet took a narrow 12-9 advantage. GU stretch the lead to 18-13 before a BC timeout righted the ship and sparked a three-point BC run. The Eagles continued to close in slowly before taking the lead back at 21-20 after a pair of Bison attack errors. The Eagles were able to gain a 23-21advantage after kills from Stoop and Virginia Collins, but GU tied things back up at 23-23. Another Collins kill gave BC its first set point that was fought off by GU and turned into a set point for the Bison. Bridgewater fought off the set point and had another match point at 26-25 that was turned aside before finally sealing the match at 28-26 on a GU attack error.
Match Stats:
- Stoop racked up another double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs in the four-set victory for BC. The sophomore was also named to the All-Tournament team.
- Atwell's efficiency continued into the second match of the day as she swung at a .500 clip with eight kills.
- Madeline Walker and Alexis Currie each tallied double-digit digs with 12 and 11 each.
- The two squads were nearly even in every stat category.
