Men's Soccer Ties with St. Vincent in Season Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team opened the season with a 1-1 tie with St. Vincent on Friday

The Basics

Final Score: Bridgewater 1, St. Vincent 1
Records: Bridgewater 0-0-1, St. Vincent 0-0-1

How It Happened
  • Each team worked the field in the early going before Gavin Kast registered the games first shot off of a corner kick but it sailed wide. BC kept on the offense with multiple shots blocked by the SVC defense before Riley Queen fired a chance on target that was scooped up by Kameron Rock in the cage.
  • The Bearcats got on the board first thanks to a free kick from just beyond the 18'. The attempt rattled off a few defenders before a cross into the box as deflected by a Bridgewater defender and into the far corner of the net to make it 1-0 SVC in the 20th minute.
  • Bridgewater answered off the ensuing kickoff as the ball was set in a play and a long pass found Ali Malik down the sideline. The sophomore dribbled in and scored to even the game at 1-1 just a few seconds after the Eagles were trailing.
  • BC had multiple chances towards the end of the opening half and in the beginning of the second as the Eagles controlled the pace of play for much of the contest.
  • St. Vincent had a chance in the 64th minute as a shot found the target but Charles Schweinefuss did his job and made the stop.  The Eagles had multiple corner kicks in the closing minutes including one in the games final 30 seconds as Kast tried to head one on target, but the attempt was waived off.
Match Notes
  • Malik found the back of the net for the lone BC score.
  • Queen led BC offensively with five shots including four on target.
  • Bruno Hurtado led the Bearcats with two shots and had a shot on frame.
  • The Eagles dominated the stat sheet, highlighted by a 25-5 difference in shots and a 12-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • BC also held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks, but neither team capitalized on the tight-angled opportunities.
