BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College baseball team stuck with No. 17 Shenandoah for all nine innings, but fell to the Hornets, 6-5, in ODAC action at the Bridgewater Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles jumped out in front early as Jeffrey Snider and Nick Stavros each drew walks to start the bottom of the first inning. Brandan Hartman followed by stroking a single into right field that scored Snider from second and advanced Stavros to third. Jonathan Sexton put a ball in play that allowed Stavros to cross home plate and Bridgewater led 2-0 after the first frame.
- Shenandoah responded in the visiting half of the second as Brody Pickette and Haden Madagan drew two-out walks to put runners on first and second. Luke Keister laced a double to the gap in left-center field to score both runners and he came around to score on a Frankie Ritter single in the next at bat as the Hornets went in front, 3-2.
- Bridgewater threatened to score in the home half of the same inning as the Eagles loaded the bases after forcing an early pitching change from Shenandoah, but the Hornets were able to turn a double play and strand a pair of runners in scoring position and SU remained in front, 3-2.
- The third inning saw the Eagles take the lead again as Hartman singled to right-center field. Sexton belted a home run over the wall in left field to push BC back in front, 4-3, after three frames.
- The lead held until the sixth inning when Pearce Bucher reached base on a single and found his way to third base. He crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Madagan to knot the game at 4-4.
- The back-and-forth game continued as the Eagles battled back in front in the home half of the same frame. Christian Harris started things off with a single to right and found his way to second on a Nick Dawson sac bunt. The freshman moved to third after a fly out to center and came in to score on a Stavros RBI single to right field. The Eagles retook the lead at 5-4.
- A big eighth inning from the nationally-ranked Hornets put the visitors back in front as Andrew Falk hit a lead-off single and stole second base. He came in to score on a pinch-hit RBI double by Connor Houser that also moved Madagan to third after he reached on a fielding error. Madagan came in to give the Hornets a 6-5 lead on a ground out with the bases loaded.
- The Eagles got a runner in scoring position in the eighth, but could not capitalize and stranded a runner at first in the ninth as Shenandoah held on for a 6-5 win.
GAME STATS
- Tristan Gordon went 3-for-5 on the day with a double, while Hartman and Sexton each had a pair of hits, including Sexton's third-inning homer.
- Stavros, Ashton Smith, Harris and Nick Dawson also contributed a hit in the loss.
- Sexton recorded a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Hartman and Stavros each registered an RBI and a run scored.
- Snider was held without a hit, but walked twice and came around to score once.
- James Swart got the start on the mound and went 2.0 innings yielding three runs (all earned) on three hits and struck out a pair of batters
- Andrew Baugher tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless relief and Hunter Covill also pitched a scoreless frame of relief. Nick Griffin was saddled with the loss after going 1.2 innings of work and allowing two runs (none earned) on three hits with one strikeout.
- For the Hornets, nine different battles recorded a hit with Keister pacing the team with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
- Joey Mitchell moved to 5-0 on the year after pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts. Andrew Gload started on the bump but was chased after just 1.0 inning-plus of work. Parker Farrington threw the remaining 4.2 innings and scattered eight hits with three runs (all earned) allowed.
