Women's Lacrosse Tames Panthers

FERRUM, Va. -- The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team defeated Ferrum easily, 18-4, in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kaity Petersheim put the Eagles up early in the contest with a goal less than 90 seconds in with a helper from Lauren Roberts. Ashley Venit scored only 26 seconds later and doubled the lead to 2-0. Paige Mayers added another before Petersheim got her second of the game to give BC a quick 4-0 lead to start the game. Ferrum finally responded with a goal from Willow Cooper with six minutes to play in the first to cut into the deficit, but Annika Benson and Venit each scored before the final horn of the period as Bridgewater went into the second quarter with a 6-1 advantage.
  • The scoring run for BC continued through the second with seven-straight goals as the Eagles jumped out to a 13-1 lead and started a running clock. Grace Pietro scored the first one of the quarter before Roberts, Mayers, Venit and Petersheim all scored in a row. The Panthers scored with just 10 seconds left in the half as Cooper got her second of the game, but the Eagles led 13-2 at the break.
  • In the second half, Roberts scored her second of the game before Faith Feazell added a tally to make it 14-3. Jenna Entsminger got in on the scoring action with six seconds left in the third after taking a pass from Addison Garrett to take a 15-3 lead into the final 15 minutes.
  • Benson added her second goal of the game three minutes in to the fourth quarter before Entsminger got her second score to push the lead to 17-3. Victoria Tyler scored one more for the home side and Mayers ended the game with a goal with 1:25 left in the game to set the scoreline to the final score of 18-4.
GAME STATS
  • Petersheim led the game with seven points off four goals and three assists, while Venit registered four goals as well to go along with an assist.
  • Mayers also had a hat trick with an assist to finish with four points in the win.
  • Roberts, Benson and Entsminger all had two goals, while Pietro had the final tally.
  • Aunnie Hacker had two assists with Roberts, Entsminger and Garrett also registering a helper.
  • Petersheim paced the game with five caused turnovers, while Mayers had four CTs. Roberts pitched in two of her own.
  • Roberts and Pietro both grabbed four draw controls and Mayers scooped up three.
  • Roberts and Maisen Jenkins led the team with three ground balls with Pietro, Petersheim, Lindsay Davis and Rachael Robinson all with two. 
  • Bridgewater out shot Ferrum, 36-12, and had a 20-16 edge in ground balls. Both teams pulled down 12 draw controls.
  • Robinson started the game and made one save on three shots faced and Jenkins played the final 30 minutes with four saves.
  • The Eagles were nearly perfect in clears going 20-for-21 and forced 10 failed clears by the Panthers who finished 13-for-23 in clearing opportunities.
