HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One:
- The Marlins jumped on the board in the top of the first after the game started with two quick outs. Mackenzie Myers got tagged by a pitch to extend the inning before a pair of singles brought her around to make it 1-0.
- BC went down in order in the first and Delaney Lail returned the favor in the top half of the second to keep the scoreline the same. Abby Byrum opened the top of the second with a single and advanced al the way to third before she was left stranded.
- VWU added on to the lead in the top of the third as Karley Beltran singled and later scored on an Emma Adams single to center field making it 2-0.
- The top of the fourth is where the visitors did the most of their damage. A two-run knock by Beltran made it 4-0 and a Laci Campbell triple just a few pitches later made it 6-0 before BC had to go to the bullpen. A sacrifice fly by Myers capped the inning off at a 7-0 VWU lead.
- Lail looked to get some of the runs back as she singled to open the bottom of the fourth, but a pair of strikeouts by Adams left her stranded. Virginia Wesleyan tagged on one more run in the top of the fifth and BC went down in order in the home half of the frame for it to reach the early conclusion.
GAME STATS:
- Lail and Byrum were the only two BC hitters to tally hits in game one.
- Adams tossed the game's opening 3.0 innings to earn the win. Julia Piatrowski came in and polished off Adam's Start with 2.0 innings of work to go along with four strikeouts. Beltran and Adams each drove in a pair of runs offensively for the Marlins.
- Lail (4-4) took the loss after surrendering the games opening seven runs. Erica Nelson did not allow a hit in her relief effort, but a pair of walks allowed the final run to reach.
GAME TWO
- VWU put a runner on with one gone in the top of the first via an error. Campbell stole second before another error moved her to third. The Marlins took the lead thanks to the sacrifice flyout that followed from Myers and looked to do more damage before a pop up to Andrea Savage at third ended the inning.
- Jazmyne Smith walked in the bottom half of the first, but she was left stranded. The BC defense limited the damage of a one-out walk thanks to a nice snag by Smith on a line drive and a tag right away before the runner could tag up to end the top of the second.
- After the double play, neither side could get a runner aboard as Adams and Samantha Martin started to settle in. BC ended the streak in the bottom of the third as Jordan Wise singled with two outs before being stranded. Immediately VWU went to work offensively as a bloop single put Adams aboard and the Marlins went to a pinch runner. Another base knock and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position before another sacrifice flyout drove in the insurance run to make it 2-0.
- BC responded without skipping a beat. Lail opened the inning with a single the opposite way and the speedy Cheyenne Barlow came on to run. Byrum singled the opposite way as well to put a second runner on and Lexi Schaaf gave up her at bat with a bunt to move the pair of runners into scoring position. Mckenna Mueller stepped in next and hit a laser off the glove of the short stop allowing for Barlow to score and Byrum to advance to third. Mueller stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position, but a strikeout and a groundout back to Adams in the circle kept it a 2-1 VWU edge.
- Both sides put runners on in the fifth thanks to singles, but both were left stranded. From that point forward both pitchers took over as neither side earned a base runner except for a comebacker off the leg of Martin that allowed for Joslyn Woodard to reach in the top of the seventh.
GAME STATS:
- Five different Eagles registered hits in game two. Smith was the only BC base runner to reach twice thanks to her walk early in the game.
- Adams went the advertised distance again for her eighth win of the season. She surrendered five hits and just the one earned run. Olivia Knight led the way offensively for the Marlins with the only multi-hit effort of game two.
- Martin (4-3) tossed the full seven innings and allowed just one earned run despite being on the hook for the loss. The senior allowed just seven base runners in game two.
