HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles jumped out the gate with a goal from Riley Stewart off an assist from Drew Huber just over a minute into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. The Hornets leveled the game at 1-1 after a goal from Aaron Coombs at the 12:30 mark, but Huber gave the lead back to the home side two minutes later as he found the back of the cage after taking a pass from Grant Nyland, 2-1. Shenandoah's leading scorer Logan Clingerman tied the game again on an unassisted play and Stephen Graham scored his first of four to give SU it's first lead of the night, 3-2. Tyler Pinto scored less than 60 seconds later to knot the game once again at 3-3 and Aidan Bruehl put the lead back into the Eagles' hands after a pass from Stewart led to a goal. The score was tied up again as Bryan Berryhill scored with fewer than 90 seconds remaining in the first as the game went to the second quarter in a deadlock.
- The second period was all Shenandoah as it netted the only three goals of the quarter to assume a 7-4 lead as the game went to the halftime recess. The Eagles responded out of the break with back-to-back goals from Pinto and Nyland to cut the deficit down to just one at 7-6. The Hornets battled back with another goal from Graham to go back up by two scores, but the Crimson & Gold rallied for three-straight goals to end the quarter as Trevor McClelland notched a man-up goal off a feed from Pinto, Owen Cogan got in on the scoring, unassisted, and McClelland scored a second right before the end of the quarter to push the Eagles in front, 9-8, heading for the fourth.
- Ryan Linn added to the team's lead with an unassisted goal to make it 10-8. Shenandoah got one back just over a minute later to cut the lead down to one goal, 10-9. After a brief delay in the contest, Berryhill tallied his second of the night to tie the game once again with 4:40 remaining in regulation. With 44 seconds left on the clock, the Hornets got what some may have thought would be the game-winning goal off the stick of Sam Poster. A faceoff win by Gabriel Alexander gave the Eagles possession and quickly got into the attacking end and used a timeout with 33 seconds left in regulation. Following the timeout, the Pinto scored after receiving a pass from Huber to tie the game at 11-11 with only 12 seconds left on the clock. The Eagles won the ensuing face off but the clock hit zeros as the game went to overtime.
- The Hornets faceoff man Austin Galler won at the X to start off the four-minute overtime period but quickly turned the ball over as Stewart forced a loose ball. The Eagles maintained possession but could not get a shot off on target in time as the ball went the other way on a shot clock violation. The Hornets called a timeout after clearing with 2:08 left in the first OT and a big shot from Graham was blocked aside by the Eagles defense and went the other way. Several turnovers for each team were caused around midfield before Brennan McKeown picked up a GB and allowed Bridgewater to use its timeout. A turnover on the Eagles' end let the Hornets get possession with 30 seconds left in the first OT before Landon Blackshear forced a turnover that was picked up by Jacob Mead to maintain the deadlock and send the game to a second overtime frame.
- Alexander won the faceoff to start the final overtime period and sprinted into the attacking third to get a timeout called by BC. Following the timeout, Bridgewater had a great scoring opportunity on a shot that hit the post. A quick clear by SU led to a shot by Poster that was saved by Gabe Wallaman. Clingerman scooped up the loose ball and allowed the Hornets to use their final timeout as well. After the stoppaed, a high shot from Clingerman went out of play and the Hornets maintained possession leading to an open shot by Graham for the game winner.Â
