HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One:
- CNU opened the game with a single, but the Eagles and Mackenzie Cauthorn regrouped to keep the game scoreless. After BC was retired in order, the Captains struck first as a walk and an Eagle error put runners in scoring position with one out. CNU took advantage of another BC error to score the first run of the game and did not look back as a fielder's choice and a single stretched the lead to 3-0 for CNU.
- Bridgewater looked to respond in the home half of the second as a single against the shift by Delaney Lail and a CNU error put two runners on with just one out. A pair of strikeouts from Kate Alger got CNU out of the jam and kept them in front.
- BC fought off two runners in scoring position for the Captains in the top of the fourth and looked to strike. Jazmyne Smith opened the inning with a double and a wild pitch allowed for her pinch runner, Cheyenne Barlow, to advance to third. A second wild pitch in the same at bat gave Barlow plenty of time to break for the plate and score to make it a 3-1 BC deficit.
- The Captains added to the advantage in the top of the fifth with a walk and a bae rip to make it 4-1. CNU added to the advantage in the sixth as an infield hit and a double from the fifth-ranked team in the land made it 5-1.
- Jordan Wise looked to help Bridgewater get the offense going in the home half of the sixth as she led the frame off with a single the opposite way. Alger dug deep in the circle for CNU and forced Wise to be left stranded after she forced a groundout to retire the side. Christopher Newport tagged on two more runs in the top of the seventh and a three-up three-down frame in the bottom of the seventh wrapped up game one.
GAME STATS:
- Lail, Smith and Wise all had hits for BC in game one.
- Candace Slaw and Brooke Greaver each rove in a pair of runs. Slaw led CNU in the hitting department as well with a 4-for-4 effort. Alger (6-2) got the win for the Captains as she went the full seven innings and struck out 10.
- Cauthorn (3-3) took the loss for BC in the circle after striking out five CNU batters and allowing three earned runs in 6.0 innings of work.
GAME TWO
- Slaw started game two with another hit, but a good opening inning after the lead off single by Elena Williams kept the game scoreless. BC's first two hitters in game two were retired, but a single by Smith extended the frame. Lail reached next on a CNU error, but a groundout ended the frame to keep the game scoreless. The Eagles kept the momentum rolling after a three-up three-down frame defensively. Sarah Kate Tozier walked, and she was moved forward after a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Mahan to allow her to utilize her speed. Caroline Malandra delivered as she singled up the middle allowing for Tozier to scoot home and make it 1-0 in favor of the home team.
- CNU responded in the top of the third with a lead off single. A stolen base moved the runner to second. A fielder's choice and a ground out put a pair of runners in scoring position before a sacrifice fly tied the game. Katie Currin stepped in next with a runner on third and she delivered for the Captains with a home run to left field to give CNU the lead at 3-1.
- Both sides went down in order after the long ball until Abby Byrum singled to open the bottom of the fourth for the Eagles. Byrum was left stranded and CNU pounced as a walk and a BC error moved the CNU runner to third. A single pushed the insurance run across and made it 4-1 for the visitors after the top of the fifth.
- The Captains looked to add to the lead in the top of the seventh and put two runners on base before Williams made a nifty play on a ground out to end the threat.
- Bridgewater did not go down silent in the bottom of the seventh. Cauthorn pinch hit for Tozier to start the inning and worked a walk. Tozier came back in to run and utilize her speed once again. Mahan tried to lay down another bunt, but her speed was on display this team as she beat the throw to first, putting two runners on with no outs. Malandra stepped to the plate representing the potential game-tying run. Christopher Newport recognized the magnitude of the situation and made the change in the circle going back to Alger to try and close out game two. Malandra gave up her at bat and laid down a bunt to push the two runners over into scoring position with just one out. Alger did her thing as she retired the next tow BC hitters via the strikeout to hang on.
GAME STATS:
- Four different Eagles recorded hits in game two. Malandra had the only RBI for BC in either contest, but also gave up her at bat when it mattered.
- Greaver and Currin drove in a pair of runs each for the Captains in the win. Haylee Callahan (4-0) got the win in the circle for CNU and Alger recorded her first save on the season.
- Williams hurled a complete game for BC as she surrendered three earned runs on five hits.
