HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One:
  • Mackenzie Cauthorn sat the Monarchs down in order to start the first and BC capitalized. McKenna Mueller reached on a walk to open the bottom of the first and was moved into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt. Jazmyne Smith stepped in next and delivered with a single the opposite way to bring Mueller in and give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. BC proceeded to load the bases after a pair of walks that followed the Smith hit, but a flyout and a throw from Methodist got them out of the inning surrendering just a run.
  • MU clapped back in the top of the second and third.  A triple and a groundout allowed for the Monarchs to get on the board in the second and MU led off the third inning with a bunt single. The leadoff runner advanced to second on a wild pitch, but a punchout from Cauthorn helped ease some tensions. The Monarchs executed a sacrifice bunt and BC tried to turn two. The Eagles threw across the diamond after getting the easy out and the throw was off target, allowing for the runner to break for home and score.
  • Bridgewater struck back in the bottom of the third as Mueller led the frame off with a single and another sacrifice bunt from Jordan Wise put Mueller in scoring position and she snuck her way to third on the play. Like a broken record, Smith delivered as needed with a sacrifice fly to even the score.
  • The Monarchs wrestled the lead back in the fifth and did all the work with two gone. A double down the left side kept the inning alive for the visitors and a Lacey Ayres single drove in the go ahead run at 3-2.
  • Bridgewater fought back instantly as Hannah Mahan singled to open the bottom of the fifth. Sarah Kate Tozier walked and then a perfectly-executed double steal moved the tying and go ahead run into scoring position. Mueller delivered again as he flyout gave Mahan enough time to tag up from third and score to tie the game. Wise stepped in next and did the same as her ground ball allowed for Tozier to scoot home and give the Eagles a 4-3 edge. The damage wasn't done yet as Smith doubled to keep the frame alive. Delaney Lail dug in next and smoked a ball through the gap the opposite way to drive in Cheyenne Barlow, Smith's pinch runner, and make it 5-3 for the home team. Methodist had a shot to strike in the seventh with a leadoff single but the Eagles held on for the win.
GAME STATS:
  • Mueller and Smith fueled the offense as they drove in three of BC's five runs. Smith was one of two players ion either side to tally multiple hits in game one.
  • Hayley Downes tallied a pair of hits for MU. Alex Edwards also helped the cause with a pair of RBI.
  • Cauthorn took the win in game one as she went all seven innings surrendering just five hits.
GAME TWO
  • Methodist hopped on the board early in game two. Edwards was hit by the very first pitch of the game and worked her way around to third. With two down the Monarchs got the lead as a throwing error allowed Edwards to score and make it 1-0.
  • Bridgewater hit into two quick outs in the second before a Smith base knock extended the inning. She was left stranded, and Methodist had a chance to strike back, but a strikeout by Lail in the circle kept the lead to just a run.
  • MU added to the lead in the top of the third. A trio of hits loaded the bases for the visitors and BC sent one of the runners packing as she tried to swipe home on a wild pitch, pushing the inning to two away. A single followed the out allowing for MU to make it 2-0. BC went to Samantha Martin to finish the frame and she induced a line out to get BC out of the jam.
  • Both sides went down in order after that until Smith led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. Methodist quickly nullified the runner on as the Monarchs turned a 3-6-4 double play.
  • Keirsten Margoupis took over from that point forward for Methodist as she did not allow a base runner after the Smith knock in the fourth. The Monarchs looked to add to the lead, but Martin stood tall in the circle to keep MU in check.

GAME STATS:
  • Smith was the source of offense for the Eagles in game two with a pair of base knocks.
  • Hannah Lovick led Methodist with three hits. Margoupis' complete game also led to the victory as she allowed just three base runners.
