Balanced Attack for Baseball Fuels Sweep Against Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team returned to conference play Saturday using a balanced attack of offense and defense to sweep Averett 9-2 and 8-1.

THE BASICS

Final Score: (Game one) Bridgewater 9, Averett 2; (Game two) Bridgewater 8, Averett 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One
  • The Eagles put up four runs in their half of the second inning. Isaac Sumpter plated Lucas Bauer for the first run of the game hitting a single to right field. Nick Dawson loaded up the bases by drawing a walk. Jeffrey Snider, with a huge opportunity to bust the game wide open, brought a run in drawing another walk. Nick Stavros barreled one up through the right side for a two RBI single and the final runs of the inning.
  • In the bottom of the second, BC got into some trouble with the bases loaded. With two outs, Joe Christopher induced a fly out to right field to prevent the offensive threat of AU.
  • Dawson started the top of the fourth inning dropping a single out in right field, then stole second. Snider capitalized with the runner in scoring position driving a ball to center field to put Bridgewater up 5-0. Snider secured the second stolen base of the inning, then the Cougars' pitcher loaded the bases with a hit by pitch and a walk. Averett decided to go to a new arm and successfully got out of the inning.
  • AU got on the board in the bottom of the fifth following a huge double play from the Eagles' defense. Brandt Brophy found open grass in center field for a single, then Trevor Testerman added an RBI double down the left field line to cut the deficit to four, 5-1.
  • The Cougars score another run in the bottom of the when a successful sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. The following batter grounded out to the short stop to give the runner from third enough time to touch home plate. Nick Harris, who came on in relief for Christopher, got the final out on a strike out swinging.
  • BC added some insurance in the top of the seventh when Nick Stavros dropped in a single to left field to plate the sixth run of the ball game. Brandan Hartman took a hit by pitch to increase the lead. Jonathan Sexton stepped up to the plate and delivered a single through the right side to score Snider to make it 8-2.
  • Sexton added Bridgewater's final run in the top of the ninth plopping a single into left field to score Stavros. Nick Harris put the nail in the coffin closing out the game to give the Eagles the 9-2 victory.
GAME STATS
  • Stavros had a big day at the dish going 4-for-6 and recording three RBIs.
  • Sexton recorded a 3-for-5 hit day an had three RBIs along with a walk.
  • Seven BC players recorded multiple hits in the game.
  • Sumpter and Dawson each scored two runs in the game.
  • Christopher pitched his way to a win putting in 5.0 innings of work, giving up two runs on five hits and registering three strike outs. Nick Harris also had a big day closing out the game with 4.0 innings pitches, allowing five hits and striking out four.
Game Two
  • Bridgewater started the top of the first on the attack when Snider found open grass in center field. Stavros moved the runner getting a base knock out to left field. AU picked up two quick outs on the next at-bat getting Hartman to fly out then the right field using his arm to get Snider out at the plate. Lucas Bauer issued a huge two-out single up the middle to open a 1-0 lead.
  • Reid Long began to settle in racking up four strike outs through the first three innings. The scoring continued for the Eagles in the top of the fourth inning when Dawson flied out to right field for a sacrifice scenario.
  • Christian Harris began the top of the top of the sixth singling to center field, then TJ Johnson recorded a hit with a ball hit through the left side. With runners on second and third, Dawson drove a ball up the middle to put BC up 3-0.
  • Bridgewater rallied with a four-run inning in the top of the seventh inning with Snider leading off with a double deep to left center. A double steal on the bases eventually led to Snider coming home to score on a wild pitch. Christian Harris rushed the shortstop into a fielding error add another run to the scoreboard. Dawson delivered a huge two RBI double to left field to increase the lead 7-0.
  • The Cougars added one in the bottom of the seventh when the bases were loaded, and the batter hit a hard ground ball allowing enough time for the runner for third to score. James Swart got out of the inning with a ground out to the short stop.
  • Andrew Baugher came into the game in the game in the bottom of the eighth successfully racking up three outs.
  • Tristan Gordon added the last run of the ball game when he doubled to left center and scored Sumpter from first base. Nick Griffin was called on in the bottom of the ninth and pitched his way to a BC victory of 8-1.
GAME STATS
  • Stavros had another effective game going 3-for-4, scoring two runs and walking once.
  • Dawson led the team with a career-high four RBIs while going 2-for-4.
  • Gordon went 3-for-5 at the plate driving in a run.
  • Long awarded the win after going 6.0 scoreless inning, allowing five hits and recording nine of Bridgewater's 12 strikeouts.

The Eagles travel to Winchester, Va. for another ODAC matchup with No. 1 Shenandoah on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.
