Baseball Fuels Comeback Late to Win Against Keystone

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Bridgewater College baseball team fueled a comeback in the ninth inning to win against Keystone 6-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Not much offense occurred in the early innings as James Swart racked up three strike outs through the first two innings. The Eagles got on the board in the third inning when Nick Stavros reached on base with an infield single to second. Lucas Bauer dropped in a single to center field to advance Stavros to second. Jeffrey Snider reached base hitting into a fielder's choice advancing a runner. With runners on first and third, TJ Johnson stepped up to the plate and planted a single in center field to score the first run of the game.
  • The Giants responded with the long ball in the bottom of the third as Jacob Yager hit a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead. Swart relied on his defense to get out of the inning inducing a fly out and a ground out.
  • Andrew Baugher came in relief for Swart, in the bottom of the sixth, retiring the side in order on ground outs to the infield. BC started the top of the second with Christian Harris doubling to left center field. Snider tied the game up hitting a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Christian Harris home from third.
  • Keystone took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth with the first batter reaching second with a ball hit to left field. A sacrifice bunt was called on the following play to move the runner to third. A single was dropped in to bring the runner home to make it a 3-2 ball game. Baugher got the final out striking out the batter.
  • Isaac Sumpter led off the top of the ninth doubling to right field which was followed by up by a single by Stavros to put a runner in scoring position. Christian Harris hit a fly out to left field in the following at bat to plate Sumpter and knot the score at three apiece. Snider delivered a huge double to take the lead back 4-3. Nick Dawson added more insurance singling to right field to bring Bauer home. The Eagles ended their rally with Tristan Gordon hitting a ball to deep center field to allow Snider to tag up and use his speed to give BC the 6-3 advantage.
  • Bridgewater went to its bullpen in the bottom of the ninth calling on Spencer Lloyd to close out the game. Lloyd ended the game in a huge way striking out the last batter with the bases loaded earning the save and giving the Eagles the 6-3 win.
GAME STATS
  • Johnson and Stavros each recorded a 3-for-4 performance. Johnson also had a walk and an RBI, while Stavros scored two runs.
  • Snider picked up two RBIs in his 2-for-4 outing to lead BC in the category.
  • Yager led the way for the Giants going 3-for-4 scoring two runs and racking in two RBIs.
  • Swart was successful in his start going 5.0 innings giving up two runs on five hits and recording five strike outs.
  • Baugher was awarded his second win of the season for his 3.0 innings of work giving up three hits, one run, and striking out one.
  • Lloyd picked up his second save this season coming in for Baugher in the ninth going 1.0 inning.
