Bridgewater Upended by No. 13 Washington and Lee

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team opened the ODAC slate with a 23-5 loss to No. 13 Washington and Lee at the Jopson Turf Field on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater scored the game's first goal as Jackson Wicker found the back of the cage less than 90 seconds into the contest. The Generals responded with a goal at the 12 minute mark, but Trevor McClelland linked up with Hayden Gourley to push the Eagles ahead 2-1 with 11:10 left in the first quarter. Tyler Pinto added another goal to the lead with 6:54 to go in the opening frame.
  • The Generals scored four-straight goals at the end of the first to take a 4-3 lead into the second period. A 12-0 scoring differential in the second gave the No. 13th ranked team in the country a 16-3 lead at halftime. The scoring run continued in the third as WLU went ahead 18-3 with eight minutes on the clock. Drew Huber ended the Eagles' scoring drought with a goal at the 6:57 mark of the third as Riley Stewart followed with a goal of his own to set the score at 18-5. One more Generals goal at the 3:27 mark set the score at 19-5 heading into the final frame.
  • Washington and Lee was able to add four more scores in the final 15 minutes to take away a 23-5 victory. 
GAME NOTES:
  • Huber led the Eagles with a goal and two assists, while McClelland, Wicker, Stewart and Pinto added goals. Gourley also had an assist on the day. 
  • Ryan Addison had two caused turnovers to go with four ground balls, while McClelland, Aidan Bruehl, Liam Santilli and Dan Flynn caused one turnover each.
  • Gabriel Alexander was 17-of-27 on faceoffs with 14 ground balls as Ryan Linn picked up three ground balls and Wicker and Jacob Mead each had a pair.
  • Gabe Wallman played the first half between the pipes and made five saves, while Zach Guthrie-Pimpinella stopped five saves in all 30 minutes of the second half. 
  • Washington and Lee outshot the Eagles 66-31 and had a 39-32 edge in ground balls. 
UP NEXT
The Eagles are back in action for their first road game of the year at Juniata on Friday, March 1. The game is set for a 12 pm start.
