BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team swept Elizabethtown 5-4 and 11-9 in doubleheader action Sunday afternoon.
THE BASICS
Final Score: (Game one) Bridgewater 5, Elizabethtown 4; (Game two) Bridgewater 11, Elizabethtown 9

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One:
- The game did not see much offense to begin the game as both Reid Long and Joey Smith were effective on the mound. The Blue Jays struck first in the top of the sixth with Mason Woolwine leading off with a single which then brought AJ Bednar to the plate who hit a double down the left field line making it 1-0. Alex McClain issued a ball in the same territory to go up 2-0. The Eagles went to their bullpen brining in Caleb Penner and was successful with the help of his defense.
- Elizabethtown continued scoring runs in the top of the seventh with a runner on first, Quentin Perilli drove a ball deep to left field to increase the lead 4-0. Penner responded getting the next two batters on a ground out and a fly out.
- BC ignited a spark in the offense in the bottom of the eighth inning when Jonathan Sexton led off with a single to left field. Christian Harris and Lucas Bauer each singled to right field to load the bases. Brandan Hartman seized the opportunity dropping another single to right to put the first run on for Bridgewater. Jeffrey Snider continued the rally dropping another single through the right side scoring Christian Harris from third. TJ Johnson hit a ball far enough for Bauer to tag from third base and get the sacrifice fly. Tristan Gordon knotted the game at four finding open grass in right field to plate another runner. The Blue Jays went to their bullpen and escaped anymore threats from the Eagles' offense.
- Spencer Lloyd prevented any runners from crossing home plate in the top of the ninth giving BC the chance to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth. Christian Harris doubled down the left field line which brought Bauer to the plate who was intentionally walked. With runners on second and third, following a wild pitch, Elizabethtown decided to intentionally walk Snider to get the force at any bag. TJ Johnson scored Christian Harris after reaching first off a fielder's choice completing the walk off 5-4.
GAME STATS
- The Eagles were successful on the base path with three players having a stolen base.
- Christian Harris, Snider and Gordon each went 2-for-4 on the day.
- Long was effective in his start going 5.1 innings giving up two runs on seven hits and three strike outs.
- Spencer Lloyd picked up the win going 2.0 innings giving up one hit and striking out four
Game Two:
- Unlike the first game, the Blue Jays wasted little time scoring in the top of the first inning. With bases loaded McClain hit a hard ball to second base good enough for a single to score Perilli from third. RJ Agriss hit another infield single to the shortstop to plate another runner. Alex Perrin brought in two more runs hitting a ball through the left side to give Elizabethtown a 4-0 advantage.
- Bridgewater got on the board in the bottom of the second with Johnson using his vision to draw a walk. Nick Dawson, Gordon and Sexton all dropped in singles to keep the inning alive. Luke Tomajczyk reached first base following a fielder's choice that plated Dawson from third base cutting the deficit to three, 4-1.
- Elizabethtown got a two-out rally going in the top of the fourth when a batter reached first off an error to plate the runner. The defensive mistake proved costly for the Eagles as Perrin hit one over the right field wall to increase the lead to 8-1.
- Johnson singled to left field in the bottom of the fifth to plate two runners then two batters later he would score off a wild pitch to cut the lead in half 8-4.
- The Blue Jays capitalized on a costly error from the BC defense allowed a runner to score in the top of the sixth increasing the lead to 9-4.
- Bridgewater had a lengthy inning of scoring in the bottom of the sixth Nick Stavros doubled to center field to bring Tomajczyk home from second base. Snider entered his at-bat with the bases loaded and took pitches to draw a walk and bring home the runner from third. Johnson dropped in a single through the left side to bring the score within two, 9-7. A ground out from Dawson scored another runner from third base. Gordon stepped up to the plate and delivered a double down the third base line to give the Eagles the first lead of the game, 10-9. Tomajczyk added insurance lining a single up the middle to score Gordon and make it 11-9.
- Not much happened in the seventh and eighth innings thanks to successful pitching on both sides. Brett Midkiff entered the game in the top of the ninth to shut the door and earn the save opportunity. Midkiff successfully located his pitches to get three outs and give BC the win 11-9.
GAME STATS
- Bridgewater tallied four batters who recorded a multi-hit game.
- Johnson tallied three RBIs in his 2-for-4 performance.
- The Eagles used six pitchers to get through the game. Jared Peake was awarded the win going 1.0 inning allowing one run on one hit.
- Midkiff picked up his second save of the early season going 1.0 inning giving up one hit and striking out one.
