Women's Basketball Cruises past Averett on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's basketball team defeated Averett 64-43 on senior day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two seniors connected on the first scoring play of the game as Abby Freeman dished to Jaden Alsberry. Averett responded with four-straight points to take a 4-2 lead before the Eagles took over. BC scored 13-straight points to end the quarter highlighted by four points each from Freeman and Jay Garcia to make it 15-4 after the opening quarter.
  • The Eagles continued to roll to open the second quarter as Reagan Maynard connected with Freeman to start a 6-0 run for the Eagles. Averett finally got on the board after Bridgewater's 19-0 run came to an end. After the first Cougars bucket in quite some time, Kayla Ford drained a three-pointer to put the Eagles in front 24-6 halfway through the frame. AU replied with six-consecutive points of its own to slice into the lead, but again BC replied as Freeman hit India Dailey on her way to the cup. Five-straight points from Rosemary Pierson pushed the BC edge to 31-12 after the opening half of play.
  • Averett opened the second half with a 5-0 run before Freeman accounted for a 5-1 run on her own to put the Eagles in front36-18 with 6:22 to go in the period. A free throw and three-pointer for the Cougars helped them try and start a momentum swing, but another Ford make from deep sparked a 10-2 BC scoring run to end the quarter. The Eagles held Averett to without a field goal over the final 5:28 of the frame, capped off by a Maynard steal that led to a My'la Green score just before the horn, making it 46-24 heading to the final stanza.
  • Garcia got the Eagles on the board in the fourth as she finished at the rim. Averett made a pair at the free throw line before scores from Dailey and Alsberry put the Eagles in front 52-26. The Cougars finally ended their drought from the floor with back-to-back makes. Aylin Humpherys found nylon to end the mini-scoring run. The make from the freshman started n 8-2 BC run that featured a pair of makes from Alsberry to put the Eagles in front 60-32 with 2:56 to play. Averett closed the game on an 11-4 run including a three-pointer in the final 15 seconds, but the damage had already been done.
MATCH NOTES
  • The two seniors anchored BC before receiving their curtain call in the final minute. Freeman tallied a game-high 13 points to go along with eight boards and five assists. Alsberry earned another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three assists and three blocks.
  • AU saw contributions from nine different scorers led by Elisa Harris with eight.
  • Garcia turned in a well-rounded day on the stat sheet with nine points and seven rebounds. The sophomore also finished at +20 on the afternoon.
  • Four different Eagles grabbed seven or more boards to fuel a 58-39 rebounding effort.
UP NEXT
Bridgewater wraps up the regular season and now awaits its fate in the ODAC Tournament. The Eagles know they will play on Friday, but their opponent and game time are still to be determined and will be announced later tonight.
