Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short against Ferrum

Box Score FERRUM, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's basketball team fell to Ferrum 60-52 on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BC got on the board first as Kayla Ford drilled a three-pointer to take a 3-0 advantage. Ferrum responded with a three of its own, but a Jaden Alsberry layup gave the Eagles the lead back. Ferrum pulled even before stepping in front at 6-5 halfway through the quarter. The two teams traded to lead back and forth and Ferrum eventually scored last to take a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Alsberry sank a layup to even the game inside the first minute of the second frame. Ferrum replied with back-to-back scores to step ahead 16-12 before Riley Corcoran made a pair at the line to get BC back in business. The Panthers drained a three-pointer to take a 19-14 lead, but a second chance bucket from Abby Freeman kept Ferrum in check. Ferrum stretched the lead out to as much as eight at 24-16, but the Eagles grinded away to make it 26-22 with 30 seconds to go in the half. Allyson Cassell scored at the buzzer to put Ferrum up 28-22 at the break.
  • Aylin Humpherys cut the lead in half out of the break with a three-pointer. After another Panthers' score Humpherys struck again from downtown to bring BC to within two. Five-straight points from the panthers made it 35-28 for the home side before Jay Garica started a quick exchange of makes between the two sides. Ferrum would slowly stretch the lead out before Garcia made it 44-39 heading to the final frame with a layup at the horn.
  • Neither side got going in the fourth until Freeman made a pair of free throws to bring the Eagles to within three. Five points in a row from Kayla Cabiness put the Panthers back head by seven, but Rosemary Pierson knocked down a three-pointer o get BC going again. FC made a free throw and Corcoran responded with a three-pointer of her own to get BC to within a pair at 49-47 with 5:48 remaining. Cabiness scored twice to push Ferrum in front by six before Alsberry made a hook shot to slice into the advantage. Ferrum replied a hook shot of its own to make it 55-49 with 213 to go. Humphreys drilled another three-pointer to cut the lead in half again at 55-52 with 1:49 to play. Ferrum made the free throws down the stretch and combined that with some defensive stops to hang on.
MATCH NOTES
  • Humpherys led BC with 12 points highlighted by four three-pointers. Corcoran added 11 and a trio of assists.
  • Cabiness led Ferrum with 16 points and Cassell added 15. Trina Lewis tallied a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards.
  • Ferrum capitalized at the line with 16 makes on 21 attempts compared to just 10 attempts in total for the Eagles.
  • The Panthers also utilized 17 BC giveaways to take a 15-5 edge on points off of turnovers.
