Eagles Win Five Set Thriller Over Randolph-Macon

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College women's volleyball took it to five sets to secure the win over Randolph-Macon in ODAC conference action at home Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 3, Randolph Macon (RMC) 2

Records: BCE (14-3 Overall, 6-1 Conf.), RMC (9-6 Overall, 5-2 Conf.)

How It Happened

  • The Eagles got off to a strong start in the first set as the offense found their groove and punished RMC's defensive specialists. RMC made nine errors for BCE to break through and easily secure the first set, 25-13.

  • The second set revealed a turn in the tides as the Yellow Jackets found their momentum limiting their errors and knocking down 13 kills compared to their seven in the previous set. RMC squeezed by to take the set, 25-21.

  • Then, right back at it, the Eagles returned to their offensive strengths as Reagan Stoop came in for the closing kill. BCE finished the set off with its most kills in the match with 15 to RMC's 12. The third set went to Bridgewater, 25-21.

  • In the fourth set, the Yellow Jackets would not look back as they came back to put up their impressive 19 kills. RMC's Kylie Wilhelmi had a few kills of her own with a total of 27 leading Randolph-Macon to a 25-18 set score.

  • As the fifth set rolled on, both teams began a back-and-forth play style. Ashley Rutherford nailed two service aces for Bridgewater to turn the momentum over and as RMC kept it close, BCE held firm to close out the fifth set, 15-12.

Match Notes

  • Both teams carried out nearly even kill totals as Randolph-Macon had 59 and Bridgewater had 55. As even as it was, Bridgewater certainly led in the block totals collecting 11 to RMC's seven, respectively.

  • Sophomore Reagan Stoop led the Eagles offensively with 27 kills, a season high. Also, Stoop rounded out the day with another double-double adding 25 digs to her stat sheet (eight total this season, four against ODAC teams).

  • Senior Ashley Rutherford collected a double-double and topped her season high in assists from last night with 43 assists and 13 digs (four total this season, two against ODAC teams).
