Men's Soccer Draws with VWU

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team worked a 1-1 draw with Va. Wesleyan on Saturday evening.

How It Happened
  • The Marlins had chances early including a pair of shots on target that were saved by Charles Schweinefuss in the opening eight minutes. BC flipped the field and had its first chance, but a shot from Ali Malik missed wide.
  • Bridgewater earned a penalty kick in the 15th minute and Declan Gallagher had his attempt saved by Ben Hayes, but Trey Widrick found the rebound and buried it to make it 1-0 BC. VWU kept on the attack and responded late in the first half as Gio Zizza found the back of the net for the Marlins to send it to the half tied at a goal each.
  • Both sides had chances in the opening minutes of the second half including a shot from Anthony Medrano that was saved by Haynes. The goalkeepers were tested often throughout the opening half , but both stood tall heading into the closing stages.
  • Va. Wesleyan had a good chance with a corner kick in the final minute, but a save by Schweinefuss secured a point for the Eagles wit the 1-1 draw and the first tie of the season for VWU in conference play.

  • Widrick's tally early was his only shot of the contest, BC saw seven different players record a shot including five on target.
  • Schweinefuss made six saves in the cage for the Eagles, while Haynes made four stops for VWU.
  • The Marlins held a 19-7 edge in shots and an 8-5 margin in shots on goal.
