HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both defenses went to work early before Kayla Ford found Riley Corcoran in transition for a layup. Freeman got in on the action on the next trip as she found Corcoran for another bucket in the paint. The sophomore from Chapel Hill made it 5-0 for BC after she made one of two at the charity stripe and the Royals were still scoreless. At the four-minute mark, EMU finally got on the scoreboard from long range before Freeman scored an easy two for BC. Freeman got in on the action again as she found Dailey in the short corner against the EMU 2-3 zone to make it 9-3 seven minutes in. EMU got on the board with a Trinity Washington and-one before Freeman scored in the paint for an 11-6 advantage after the first quarter.
  • EMU got on the board with a make at the charity stripe before each team traded makes. BC got the edge during the exchange thanks to a Ford three-pointer, but the Royals slowly closed back in to make it a 16-13 game forcing a BC timeout. Brii Refearn knocked down a jumper to bring EMU to within a point before a Jaden Alsberry second-chance effort ended a Bridgewater scoring drought. Once more EMU closed back to a point deficit and this time Freeman got to the line and made both free throws to push the lead back out to three. The senior blocked a shot on the other end and then scored on the ensuing trip down the court. Freeman stayed hot as she secured an offensive rebound and found Dailey on the wing as she drilled a three-pointer. Dailey capped off what had become a 9-1 Bridgewater run with a pair of makes at the free throw line to put the Eagles up by nine. The Royals scored just before the horn to make it 27-20 at the intermission.
  • The Royals drew first blood in the third quarter before BC responded on the opposite end as Corcoran found Freeman in the midrange. The Freeman bucket began a 14-1 run for the Eagles over nearly half of the quarter as Corcoran and Alsberry each contributed four to the effort and Dailey drained another long-range jumper. EMU ended its drought from the floor with a Redfearn jumper and went on a short 7-0 run of its own before Corcoran knocked down a three-pointer to push the lead back out to 44-30 after three quarters.
  • Alexis Edmonds got the Eagles on the board as Freeman found her for a jumper just outside the painted area. The Royals drained a long ball on the other end before Aylin Humpherys made a nifty pass through traffic to find Jaiden Polston. The Royals replied with a make, but BC replied with four-straight buckets to push the lead to 56-35 nearing the midway point of the quarter. The visitors ended the run, but for every make they had the Eagles had one as well. BC got the better of the exchange as Freeman kicked to Alsberry in the post to make it a 22-point game with to minutes to play. The Royals closed the gap down to 20 thanks to a free throw make inside of a second left, but the damage had already been done.
MATCH NOTES
  • Freeman logged a team-high 34 minutes on the way to an impressive 12 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to come up just shy of what would've been only the fourth triple-double in program history.
  • Dailey had an impressive night as well with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals, all season-highs.
  • EMU was led by Jeriyah Osborne and Kayla Surles with 11 points each.
  • The Eagles tallied 21 assists as a team as all but one player who saw action registered a helper. Freeman, Alsberry and Polston all blocked a pair of shots and Ford registered her first of her career on the way to holding EMU to 32.7% shooting.
