BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team picked up a 6-3 victory over Southern Virginia for the programs first win over the Knights in over a decade.
The Eagles started out hot as
Matthew Leonard and
Corey Beshoar cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. The top spot featured a back and fourth match as
Mark Gordon and
Gabe Elder battled back from being down a service break to have a trio of set points late in the set. The Knights tandem of Abram Robbins and Jeffery Purcell fought them off to force a tiebreak but Eagles duo prevailed 8-7(2)
Up 2-1 heading to singles play BC held the momentum as Beshoar cruised to a 6-0,6-0 win at the No. 3 spot. Gordon pushed BC closer to the win with a 6-0. 6-3 win at the No. 2 slot and
Bryce Cline clinched the team victory with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6. Elder rounded out the action as he had to battle after going ahead 6-2, 5-0. Traegan Kingston battled back for SVU to force a tiebreak. Elder fell behind 1-3 in the breaker but rattled off six points in a row to prevail 6-2, 7-6(3).
The Eagles are back in action this weekend at the ITA Southeast Regional tournament in Fredericksburg, Va.
