BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's tennis team fell to Southern Virginia 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
In doubles action,
Emma Nesselrodt and
Emily Wylie fell behind early at the top spot but stormed back before falling 3-8.
Grace Knighton and
Jolexie Whetzel met much of the same fate at the No. 2 spot falling 3-8. The Knights finished the doubles sweep after an 8-2 win at the No. 3 slot over the duo of
Raea Crabill and
Emma Staton.
The Eagles got on the board thanks to Whetzel at the No. 4 spot. The freshman battled in the early stages of the opening set before pulling away to a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Crabill also picked up a tight win at the No. 6 spot 6-4, 6-3.
Staton dropped the opening set 4-6 and trailed late in the second before taking three games in a row to force a decider 7-5. In the match tiebreak the Riverheads product fell behind early but battle back before falling 7-10.
The Eagles are back in action on Oct. 6 against Trinity at the Mapp-Whitelow Tennis Courts.
