Eagles Eliminated from ODAC Tournament by Top-Seeded Hornets

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team fell to No. 4 Lynchburg 11-1 in game three of the ODAC quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Final Score: No. 4 Lynchburg 11, Bridgewater 1
Records: Bridgewater 17-26; No. 4 Lynchburg 35-6
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jarret Biesecker opened the game with a leadoff single but was put out due to an interference call when he tried to swipe second base. The Hornets got their leadoff man aboard, as well, in the opening frame and pushed him into scoring position with a fielder's choice. The runner took off for third on a wild pitch and Jonathan Sexton tried to throw him out at the bag. The throw took an unfavorable hop and rolled into left field allowing the Hornets to get on the board.
  • Bridgewater had a chance to even the game up in the second after back-to-back singles put two runners on with one out. A fielder's choice and a fly out got the Hornets out of the inning unscathed. Lynchburg added on to the lead with a five-run second inning making it 6-1.
  • Two scoreless frames from Joe Christopher kept the game from getting out of hand. The Eagles used the momentum and loaded the bases in the top of the fourth and the freshman Nick Stavros delivered with a fly ball just deep enough to allow Hunter Clever to tag and score getting BC on the board.
  • Lynchburg padded onto the lead in the bottom fifth as it loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single. A sacrifice fly got the Hornets on the board. A bases-loaded walk and a two-run single pushed the Hornets advantage to 10-1.
  • The Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but left the bags jammed. Lynchburg tagged on another run in the bottom half of the frame by virtue of a Brandon Garcia triple, making it 11-1.
  • Bowe Rogers came in and silenced the Hornets bats over the final 1.1 innings but the Eagles were unable to get anything going offensively down the stretch except for a double from Biesecker in his final collegiate at bat.
GAME STATS
  • Biesecker finished the day 3-for-4 with a double and a walk to lead BC offensively.
  • Wesley Arrington picked up the win for Lynchburg after going just north of six innings and allowing the one earned run on the day.
  • Rogers finished the game off for BC only allowing a single base runner on a hit by pitch in the ninth. Jared Peake also tossed a solid 2.0 innings in relief as he allowed just one run on two hits.
  • Garcia finished 3-for-4 at the dish and drove in a trio of runs for the Hornets.
