NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Bridgewater College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against No. 2 Christopher Newport on Wednesday evening.
THE BASICS

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Torrie Shifflett got the day started for the Eagles with a single to set up Sarah Wimer for a two-run home run to left field making the score 2-0 Eagles.
- The Captains responded in the bottom of the first as Brooke Greaver drove in a run with a double to right field and Katie Currin brought Greaver home with a single down the right field line to even the score at 2-2.
- Defensively, both teams were stellar as no runs were allowed until the bottom of the fourth and Andrea Savage was the only player from either team to reach base as a result of a walk. Abby Rochette ended the scoring drought, driving a double into left center to bring Sammy Drew across the plate as the Captains went ahead 3-2.
- The final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth as Jules Donnelly, who came in to pinch run for the Captains, stole second, advanced to third on a flyout and stole home putting the Captains up 4-2, which held to the end.
GAME STATS
- Three Eagles recorded hits in game one including Wimer, Shifflett and Savage, including Wimer's home run.
- Samantha Martin pitched all 6.0 innings in the circle and gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits with three strikeouts. Â
- Kate Alger picked up her eighth win in the circle for the Captains after tossing a complete game scattering three hits and striking out 11 batters.
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles got on the board first again in game two as Hannah Mahan sent a ball through the left side of the infield bringing Brooklynn Fridley across the plate to make the score 1-0 in the top of the second. The Captains responded in the bottom of the second as Olivia Tullous singled to center driving in a run. Rochette crossed the plate for the Captains next as the bases were loaded and Nicole Apia walked. Mackenzie Presson slapped a ball down the right field line to bring in a run for CNU setting the score to3-1.
- The Eagles evened the score in the top of the third on a two-run homer from Morgan Lucas that sailed over the left field fence. Tullous gave the Captains control again in the bottom of the third, singling up the middle to bring Kendall Bentley home. Currin added to the Captains' lead knocking a double to right center to drive in a run.
- The Captains went on a tear in the sixth recording back to back home runs from Meredith Bickner and Greaver and RBI base hits from Ellie Post, Tullous and Brooke Childress totaling six runs for the Captains setting the score to 11-3 and ending the game.
GAME STATS
- Three Eagles recorded hits in game two including Lucas' home run.
- Mahan went 3-for-3 at the dish picking up an RBI.
- Olivia Kim picked up her first win for the Captains as Kate Alger recorded her second save in the circle.
