Baseball Falls to Eastern Mennonite

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College baseball team's comeback effort fell short against Eastern Mennonite 7-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Eastern Mennonite 7, Bridgewater 3
Records: Bridgewater 13-22, 6-11 ODAC; Eastern Mennonite 8-25, 4-13 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Eastern Mennonite wasted no time getting on the board in the top o the first. BC retired the first two Royals' hitters but a fielding error gave the visiting side their first base runner. An infield hit moved the runner into scoring position before another error allowed for the Royals to plate their first run of the day.
  • BC responded right away as Jarret Biesecker led the bottom half of the frame off with a single up the middle. The leadoff man moved forward on a groundout by Brandan Hartman and a Hunter Clever double to right knotted the game as Biesecker easily scored.
  • Both sides went down in order in the second and third innings with the exception of a pair of walks drawn by the Eagles in the third. a line out double play killed the momentum BC had rolling with two runners on as it ended the inning. EMU hopped in front in the top of the fourth with consecutive RBI base knocks allowing for three runs to score, making it 4-1 for the Royals. Lucas Bauer attempted to spark the BC offense in the fourth with a base rip, but he too was left stranded. EMU added another trio of runs in the top of the fifth by virtue of four hits and a pair of BC errors blowing the game open to 7-1.
  • The home side had multiple chances and kept leaving runners stranded until the bottom of the seventh as Clever tallied another RBI as his groundout brought Brett Tharp into score. Isaac Sumpter delivered in the next at bat as a single to center field brought Hartman around making it 7-3. Bauer extended the inning with a base knock but was left stranded after a deep fly out from Jonathan Sexton ended the frame.
  • Tharp worked a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth and a wild pitch moved him to second with no outs. Hartman dug in and drilled a line drive just to the right of the second-base bag, but a leaping catch by the Royals second baseman saved the base hit and a quick throw doubled up Tharp to silence any momentum the home side had.
MATCH FACTS
  • Hartman extended his on base streak to 33 straight games with a 1-for-4 effort and a walk in the loss.
  • Bauer made his presence felt in his return to the lineup. The Glen Allen native was the only Eagle with multiple base hits.
  • Tharp tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief work in the eighth and ninth. Caleb Penner also kept BC within striking distance as he allowed just one unearned run in 2.2 innings.
  • Natty Solomon turned in a 3-for-5 effort for the Royals and scored a run.
  • BC had opportunities down the stretch and totaled 10 runners left on base.
