BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College baseball dropped a tight contest to Mary Washington 8-6 on Wednesday evening.
THE BASICS
Final Score: Mary Washington 8, Bridgewater 6
Records: Bridgewater 11-15; Mary Washington 20-7
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mary Washington got on the board first in the top of the second as a base knock and an error put two runners aboard for the visitors. A rip through the left side allowed a runner to score and another base knock to the same spot allowed for two more Eagles to score, giving UMW a 3-0 lead early.
- A Hunter Clever single and a Jeffrey Snider double off the right-field wall put runners in scoring position with no outs in the bottom of the second. Isaac Sumpter stepped in next and grounded out but pushed Clever around to score. Camden Herron followed with a sacrifice fly to push Snider across and make it a one run game.
- UMW extended its lead in the top of the third as a double and a sacrifice fly allowed for the Eagles to make it 4-2. Clever doubled for BC in the bottom of the frame and Snider walked to put two runners on, but neither were pushed across.
- The visitors added a run in the fourth and the fifth to extend their lead to 6-2, but a scoreless sixth inning from Caleb Penner on the mound kept Mary Washington in check. Bridgewater capitalized in the bottom half of the inning as a walk by Snider and a base knock from Sumpter put runners on with no outs. Herron gave up his at bat with a sacrifice bunt to move the pair into scoring position for Kyle Carlson who delivered with a single past the diving second baseman to score both and make it a two-run ballgame. Spencer Sigmon followed with a single of his own and Jarret Biesecker delivered as he slapped a pitch the other way to score Carlson and put BC within a run. Later in the frame Brandan Hartman was tagged by a pitch to load the bases for Clever but a ground ball got UMW out of the inning with the lead still intact.
- Mary Washington extended their lead in the top of the seventh thanks to another sacrifice fly and a base knock from Ty Lowe to push the advantage to 8-5. Sumpter reached safely again, this time via the walk in the bottom half of the frame to give BC a baserunner. Herron dug in and drilled a ball to left to allow Sumpter to score and put BC back to within two. UMW made a pitching change and elected to go to Lowe on the bump to try and get out of the jam. BC made a move as well, opting for the left-handed bats of Collin Reid and Ben Anderson in pinch hitting roles to try and attack the right-hander on the hill. Reid flew out but Anderson reached on a fielder's choice and an error allowed for Herron to reach second and bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate with two gone. Biesecker dug in next and struck a ball well to center field but the play was made to retire the side. Lowe faced no trouble down the stretch as he finished the game off and retired the next six BC hitters he faced.
