HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the second thanks to a pair of walks and a base knock from Jarret Biesecker. Brett Tharp stepped to the plate next and walked driving Luke Tomajczyk across the plate to get BC on the board. Brandan Hartman stepped to the dish next and crushed a ball to center field to clear the bases to give BC a 4-0 lead.
- The Marlins got on the board in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly, but BC responded as Kyle Carlson drove in a pair of runs to extend the BC lead to 6-1. Reid Long went to work with the large lead and retired the Marlins in order in the bottom of the third. The junior allowed just two base runners in the next two frames to help BC preserve the advantage through the opening five innings.
- BC added a run in the top of the sixth as Tharp led the inning off with a double down the third-base line. Tharp was put out as Hartman hit into a fielder's choice, but a double by Hunter Clever put two runners in scoring position. VWU elected to give Jonathan Sexton the free pass to load the bases. Jeffrey Snider stepped to the plate next and grounded out, but Hartman came across to score to extend the lead.
- Virginia Wesleyan added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to draw back to within four at 7-3, but a two RBI knock by Tomajczyk and a groundout by Biesecker allowed BC to tag on three more runs to make it 10-3 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
- VWU did not go down without a fight as the Marlins put runners on the corners with only one away in the bottom of the ninth. A double to left field pushed both runners across and a single the next at bat put the Marlins back to within four at 10-6. Nick Griffin was able to record a strikeout and get the Eagles an out away from the win, but triple extended the inning and plated another VWU run. Coach Ben Spotts went to Brett Tharp to try and close the game out with the potential game-tying run in the on-deck circle. Tharp induced a groundball, but an error allowed for another Marlins run and extended the inning with it now 10-8. The fifth-year senior was able to strikeout the ninth hitter the Marlins brought to the plate in the frame to seal the game and break the career saves record.
GAME STATS
- Tharp picked up his 20th career save to break the record. He tossed just a third of an inning, but got the job done to close the game.

- The Marlins added four more in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 6-0. BC responded right away in the top of the third as Biesecker reached on an error and some small ball advanced the lefty around before a Sexton single drove him in, getting Bridgewater on the board.
- VWU extended its lead in the bottom of he fourth with a RBI single, but again the Eagles closed back in immediately. Tharp singled to lead off the top of the fifth and a Clever single brought the game-one closer around to score. Snider came to the plate later in the inning and singled up the middle to bring in Hartman, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning, and Clever. Isaac Sumpter grounded out later in the frame to score Snider and bring BC back to within a pair at 7-5.
