Women's Basketball's Season Comes to a Close in Salem

SALEM, Va. -- The Bridgewater College women's basketball saw their season draw to close in a 75-60 loss to Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics
Final Score: No. 7 Shenandoah 75, No. 3 Bridgewater 60
Records: Bridgewater 20-6, Shenandoah 19-9

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hornets opened the scoring first with a layup in transition but a jumper from Jaden Alsberry evened the game. SU pushed back in front thanks to a 7-0 stretch before another Alsberry bucket got the Eagles back on the board. Back-to-back buckets from Shenandoah a 13-4 edge before a pair of free throws by Erika Nettles stifled the run temporarily. The Hornets responded with a three-pointer after a BC turnover to take their first double-digit lead of the contest before a floated from India Dailey cut the lead back to 16-8 at the end of the opening quarter.
  • Shenandoah opened the second quarter with a triple and then backed it up with a Gabby Kristofiak layup before the two sides traded baskets. Another SU three-pointer gave the Hornets a 14-point advantage and sparked a 9-4 stretch by the team from Winchester. The Eagles were able to close back in thanks to a bucket and a pair from the charity stripe by Nettles, but a pair of Madisen Kimble three-pointers pushed Shenandoah in front. Dailey found Jasmyn pierce for a last-second score to make it 38-22 heading into the half.
  • Once more SU opened the scoring to start the third quarter, a triple and a floater from Riley Corcoran kept the Eagles within striking distance. A pair of consecutive scores by Shenandoah swung the momentum back in favor of the Hornets, but a pair of baskets from Corcoran and an Abby Branner long ball closed the game to single digits. The two sides traded scores, but another SU triple and an old-fashioned three-point play put the Hornets back in front by 16. A Nettles layup in the waning seconds made it a 55-41 game with 10 minutes left to play.
  • It took both sides nearly a minute to get into the scoring column to start the fourth quarter before the Hornets knocked down a pair at the line. Branner drilled a three-pointer sparking a stretch where she and the Hornets traded scores until another Shenandoah longball sparked an 8-0 run for SU giving the Hornets a 67-46 lead with six minutes remaining. The Eagles responded with a 9-2 stretch of their own led by Branner and Corcoran to close the gap. I total the Eagles closed the game on a 13-6 stretch but ultimately came up just short.
