Eagles End Regular Season With Gritty Win Over Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va – The Bridgewater women's basketball squad wrapped its regular season up with a win over the Lynchburg Hornets.

The Basics
Final Score: Bridgewater 69, Lynchburg 56
Records: Bridgewater 19-5 (14-4 ODAC), Lynchburg 7-18 (6-12 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • The Eagles opened the game up with a quick 5-0 run headlined by a Jaden Alsberry layup and an Abby Freeman three-pointer. Following a quick trading of baskets from both teams, the game would see a two-minute stretch without a bucket. A pair of free throws for the home side ended the drought, but a Freeman triple got the Eagles back on the board. An Alsberry second chance effort pushed the Eagles in front by seven with four minutes to go in the quarter but a quick 6-2 push from Lynchburg brought the hornets to within a single field goal. Jasmyn Pierce completed an old-fashioned three-point play in the final minute of the half to give BC a 17-11 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.
  • Lynchburg scored the first points of the quarter by virtue of a longball from Ashley Vandergrift. Another second chance effort from Alsberry allowed BC to respond after she completed the three-point play after the foul. Freeman extended the Bridgewater advantage to eight, the largest up to that point, with a quick score, but the Hornets had an answer the next trip down the hardwood. Freeman was the only Eagle to score the remainder of the frame adding eight points down the stretch, but the Hornets took advantage of the BC offensive struggles slowly crawling back and taking the lead with a layup at the horn, 33-32.
  • It took both sides over two minutes to get into the scoring column in the second half. A free throw from the Hornets allowed the to extend their lead to two, but back-to-back scores from India Dailey and Abby Branner pushed BC back in front. Lynchburg bounced back with another Vandergrift triple to take the lead back and extended it out to a three point advantage with another layup. Freeman went on another run with consecutive baskets for the Eagles taking the lead back in the back-and-forth affair. The two squads traded the lead once more before layups from Jay Garcia and Erika Nettles allowed the visiting side to pull ahead 46-44 heading into the final quarter.
  • The fourth quarter was all Bridgewater as the defense dominated, holding Lynchburg to 12 points on 26.6% shooting. The Eagles continued their paint dominance as Nettles got the scoring started with a layup down low. Bridgewater would go on to shoot 88% from the line in the quarter and closed it out with an Alsberry rebound to seal the game. BC led by as much as 14 with under a minute left as it doubled the Hornets in the fourth quarter.

Match Notes
  • Freeman led the way with a double-double scoring 20 points and snagging 10 rebounds. Alsberry also had a stellar outing as well scoring 14 points and grabbing nine boards.
  • The Eagles made it count at the line shooting 81.1 percent on the night.
  • Bridgewater dominated down low scoring 36 points in the paint compared to Lynchburg's 12.
  • The Eagles' defense was stifling as they held Lynchburg to a 26.6% shooting night from the field.
