Men's Basketball Finishes Non-Conference Schedule with a Win

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's basketball team crossed the double-digit win mark with a 61-54 win over Salisbury.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Bridgewater 61; Salisbury 54
Records: Bridgewater 10-3; Salisbury 8-5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater opened the game on a 6-0 run before Salisbury finally got on the board. The Sea Gulls nailed a three just over six minutes into the game to cut the lead in half and get their first points of the afternoon. The two teams traded makes before Salisbury knotted things up with a make at the line and a layup. Khalil Ward answered the call for the Eagles to put the home side back in front 11-8. Ward completed an old-fashioned three-point play on the next trip for BC and Aaron Oates drilled a three pointer to give Bridgewater a nine-point lead with seven minutes left in the half.
  • Salisbury took a timeout and strung together a short 5-0 run before back-to-back buckets from Alec Topper and Jordan Cooper combined with a Ward fadeaway gave BC their largest lead of the day at 23-13. Salisbury replied with a Reed Rebstock layup before Will Vetter subbed in, drilled a three and subbed out to push the lead to 11. Calvin Thomas forced a turnover and made a bucket at the end of the period to make it 26-17 at the intermission.
  • The two teams traded makes after the half before a Cooper long ball made it 33-20 for BC. Salisbury struggled to get clean looks from the floor to open the half, but its free throw shooting kept the squad around. A Layup from Jordan Oates brother the Sea Gulls back to within eight before a pair of makes from Aaron Oates pushed the home advantage to 11 once again. Salisbury slowly reeled Bridgewater back in with a 10-3 run to close the lead back down to within four. The Sea Gulls weren't done yet as the close the lead back down to four at 40-37 before Ward found a driving Will Dunlap for an easy two.
  • Each side traded blows like boxers before a Joseph Crenshaw bucket put the Eagles ahead 48-40 with six minutes on the clock. Bridgewater pushed the lead to as many as 12 after a Woody Machado long-range make, but again SU stayed around with a three pointer of its own. The long-range jumper for the Sea Gulls sparked a 7-0 run to put the visitors back to within five before free throws for BC pushed the lead back to eight. Salisbury pulled back to within four with 47 seconds on the clock before five makes at the charity stripe closed the deal.
MATCH NOTES
  • Cooper led BC with his first career double-double behind 13 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Despite being held quiet for most of the early going, Jordan Oates did as advertised, grabbing 15 rebounds. Rebstock was the only Sea Gull in double figures.
  • The Bridgewater defense went to work as they limited the Sea Gulls to just two makes from beyond the arc. BC also tallied a season-high nine blocked shots in the win behind multiple swats from Ward, Topper and Cooper.
  • Ward had a well-rounded afternoon with 10 points, four rebounds, three blocks, three steals and an assist despite getting into foul trouble early on.
