The Basics
Final Score: Shenandoah 76, Bridgewater 52
Records: Bridgewater 6-2 (2-1 ODAC); Shenandoah 6-0 (1-0 ODAC)
How it Happened
- Shenandoah opened the scoring with back-to-back makes before a Jordan Cooper layup got the Eagles on the board. BC had multiple chances to tie it up but SU replied with a 9-0 run with seven points from Jaylen Williams before a second-chance effort from Landon Hawes got the Eagles back in the score column. The Hornets responded with a three pointer before Alec Topper went to work on the block on the other end. Following the Topper make, the visitors responded with four more to make it 20-6 nearing the midway point of the half.
- Cooper got Bridgewater back on the board before eight unanswered by the Hornets made it 28-8 with nine minutes to go in the half. Joseph Crenshaw found Topper on the move to end the scoring run but a 14-3 scoring run that saw BC go scoreless from the floor for over six minutes made it 42-13. Aaron Oates ended the scoring drought, but the Hornets carried a 46-15 lead into the half.
- Oates opened the second half by finding Woody Machado in stride to put the Eagles on the front foot. Machado drilled a three-point bucket a few trips later to give the Eagles a 5-0 run before Williams did his thing to stop the run. After back-to-back makes for Su Topper scored a layup and Landon Hawes knocked down a three pointer to keep the momentum rolling. The visitors went on a five-point run of their own before Hawes drilled another three and a Cooper layup allowed BC to spark a little offensive momentum before the sides traded makes and a Gavin Bizyak long range jumper gave Shenandoah a 63-33 edge with 10 minutes to go.
- Hawes sparked a sequence of trading baskets for each team before Will Dunlap went on a six-point tear by himself. Topper kept the offense rolling before each sided scored nine points each down the stretch to close out the game.
Match Notes
- Williams led all scorers with 19 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists for SU.
- Hawes led BC with 10 points including two makes from long range. Topper tallied eight points and nine rebounds, while RK Law grabbed seven boards and added three helpers.
- Both teams struggled from beyond the arc as each shot less than 30%. BC went 0-for-10 from long range in the opening frame before knocking down six in the second half.
- Shenandoah doubled Bridgewater in points off turnovers at a 20-9 margin but a 50% clip from the floor, compared to just 31.3% for the home side, proved to be the difference.
