Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Just Short to No. 3 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's basketball team came up just short against No. 3 Christopher Newport 58-51 after a comeback effort.

The Basics

Final Score: No. 3 Christopher Newport 58, Bridgewater 51
Records: Bridgewater 2-2; No. 3 Christopher Newport 4-0

How it Happened
  • Riley Corcoran got the scoring going for BC as Jaden Alsberry found her open to put the Eagles ahead after the opening trip down the floor. The Captains responded with a seven-point run before a second chance effort from Alsberry got Bridgewater back in the scoring column. CNU closed the opening frame on a 17-5 thanks to a few BC turnovers down the stretch to take a 24-9 lead after one.
  • CNU started where they left off with a quick spree of four unanswered before Aylin Humphreys got the Eagles on the board. Christopher Newport responded and stretched the lead back out to 19 before a coast-to-coast layup from My'la Green sparked the BC offense. Another Green layup sparked a 10-3 BC run over the final seven minutes of the half. Bridgewater held CNU to just one field goal during the span and without one for the final five minutes of the half to head to the locker room trailing 33-21.
  • The No. 3 team in the country opened the third quarter with back-to-back scores but took nearly four minutes to get there. Alsberry responded on the other end as Jay Garcia found her from the midrange. After the Eagles drew an offensive foul Kayla Ford drained a triple to spark another run for the visitors. The Eagles went on an 11-5 tear and held CNU without another make from the floor for four minutes to close the game down to as little as eight points before the Captains' make. BC closed the gap back down to nine after a layup from Green and a Corcoran make at the charity stripe but two free throws at the horn by CNU made it 46-35 heading to the final 10 minutes.
  • A layup and trifecta from Christopher Newport with a Ford layup sandwiched in between pushed the lead back out to 14 for CNU, but a pair of free throws from Reagan Maynard and a Corcoran layup put the back to within striking distance. After another Captains' response Corcoran found Alsberry on the low block and Maynard knocked down a three pointer to put the Eagles back to within single digits at 55-46 forcing a timeout from coach Bill Broderick. Maynard did the dirty work as she was fouled and sank a pair at the line to cut the lead to just seven with under four minutes to go. BC had a chance to get to within five but a turnover on a second chance effort spoiled the chance and CNU bounced back to go back in front by 10. Working quickly, BC franticly tried to pull back in and a second-chance effort from Garcia gave the Eagles a spark to make it 58-50. After another defensive stop Bridgewater drove down the floor but could not convert. After yet another defensive stop Alsberry was fouled and made one of the two shots before CNU inbounded and was able to hold on.

Match Notes
  • The Eagles gave the No. 3 team in the country all it could handle by outscoring them 42-34 over the final 30 minutes thanks to more patient shooting offensively and by holding CNu to just 2/11 from long range over the span.
  • Hannah Orloff led all players with 12 points and 14 rebounds while Alsberry made her presence felt with nine points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Corcoran and Garcia added eight points each as eight different scored.
  • Bridgewater was out rebounded for the first time this season by a mark of 41-34 but held a 27-25 edge on the defensive end.
  • The fairly evenly matched game and stat line only featured one massive difference as CNU had 16 steals compared to just six for BC although the turnovers were fairly even at a 25-21 mark.
