WINCHESTER, Va. – The Bridgewater College football team extended its winning streak to four games as it downed Shenandoah, 24-10, at GloFiber Field at Shentel Stadium in ODAC action on Saturday night.
With the result, the Eagles improve to 4-1 and move to 2-0 in ODAC play, while the Hornets drop to 4-2 and fall to even in league games at 1-1.
The game started out in a stalemate as the Hornets received the ball first and turned the ball over on downs with an incomplete pass on 4th & 3 from the BC 31-yard line. Both teams were forced to punt over the next five drives before Shenandoah broke the scoreless deadlock with 13:02 left in the second quarter. The Hornets put together an 11-play, 57-yard drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal.
Later in the quarter, the Eagles took over on the SU 25-yard line following a short punt. A 12-yard pass-and-catch from
Malcolm Anderson to
Derrick Jenkins put BC in the red zone and a pair of runs from
Kennedy Fauntleroy resulted in a touchdown as Bridgewater took a 7-3 lead with 4:30 left in the opening half.
On the ensuing kickoff,
Jamari Lewis forced a fumble that he fell on to give the Eagles the ball right back on the Hornets' eight-yard line. A roll out pass from Anderson found
Tyler Gilliam in the end zone as the Eagles went up 14-3 with 3:30 left on the clock.
The Hornets began to put together a drive as they worked the ball down the field 37 yards on 10 plays with halftime looming. The Bridgewater defense stepped us to halt the drive as
Aaron Moore jumped a route for an interception on the BC 30 to end the half.
In the second half, Shenandoah shaved nearly six minutes off the clock with a 12-play drive that covered 81 yards capped by a two-yard touchdown run from Keshawn Toran to make the game 14-10 after a successful PAT with 4:07 to go in the third.
Brendan Robinson took the ensuing kickoff 52 yards to put the Eagles in Hornets territory. The offense utilized Fauntleroy for five rushes in seven plays to get the ball inside the 10-yard line. After the clock expired to end the third quarter, the Eagles started off the fourth with a three-yard touchdown run from Anderson to make it a 21-10 game.
The Hornets got near the midfield line on the following drive, but an interception by
Val West in Bridgewater territory stopped the drive and gave the ball back to the Eagles' offense.
The Eagles got into field goal range and saw a 38-yard attempt blocked by the Hornets' special teams unit to give Shenandoah the ball with 10:15 left in regulation. SU went three-and-out but faked a punt and couldn't garner a first down to give BC possession with great starting field position at the SU 32.
Jack Hendren drilled a 48-yarder to match his career high to set the score at 24-10 with 8:02 left in the game.
A 10-play drive by Shenandoah stalled out inside the Bridgewater 40-yard line after four-straight incompletions. Getting the ball back with just over three minutes left, the Hornets once again moved across midfield into BC territory. The Eagles pass defense broke up two straight passes to end the drive and give Bridgewater the ball to kneel out the last minute for the win.
The Bridgewater defense held Shenandoah, which entered the game averaging 37.5 points per game, to its lowest point total of the season of just 10 points.On the flip side, the BC offense posted 24 points against a defense that allowed just 16 per game before tonight.
Anderson went 11-of-19 through the air for 102 yards and a touchdown, while Steven Hugney was 27-of-58 for 266 yards for Shenandoah.
Fauntleroy crossed the century mark again with 107 yards on 26 carries and a touchdown. Anderson pitched in 52 yards on 11 rushes, as well. Toran led the Hornets on the ground with just 22 yards on eight tries.
Gilliam paced the Eagles receivers with 48 yards on four grabs, including a touchdown, while
Jacob Perdue had two catches as well. Broden Domenico led all receivers with six grabs for 56 yards, while Andre Jackson had four catches for 52 yards.
Defensively,
Aaron Nice led the Eagles with 12 tackles (eight solo) with 3.0 TFLs costing the opposition six yards.
Amari Presley tallied seven stops (four solo) with a team-high four pass break ups.
Shawn Harris pitched in five tackles and Moore had four solo tackles with the interception.
Eli Rucker recorded the lone sack for the defense that resulted in an eight-yard loss. West grabbed the other interception for the defense.
Bridgewater returns to action next Saturday, October 14, as it hosts nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon at 2 pm. The day will also feature a Hall of Fame ring ceremony at halftime for the three latest inductees into the BC Athletic Hall of Fame – Dan Metzler, Buck Gordon and Julie Glover Yeomans.
