Football Wins Big on Homecoming

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College football team's defense scored two touchdowns and Kennedy Fauntleroy ran for 208 yards as the Eagles picked up a 48-16 win against Ferrum in ODAC action at the Jopson Athletic Complex on BC's Homecoming on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the year with a 4-1 record in league games with the victory. The Panthers drop to 3-5 overall behind a 1-4 mark in conference games.

Bridgewater took over on its own 24 yard line midway through the first quarter and put together an eight-play drive that included a 32-yard grab by Cedric Drumgoole and ended with a Fauntleroy touchdown from 14 yards out to take a 7-0 lead with 8:45 to go in the opening period. The Eagles forced a three-and-out, but an interception by Tyree Burton put the Panthers in scoring position with five and a half minutes left in the first. A 39-yard field goal from Seth Deaton made it 7-3 with 4:40 on the clock.

On the next drive, the Eagles got a first down after three runs from Fauntleroy and completed another deep pass to Drumgoole that was called back due to a BC penalty. A 12-yard run by Brendan Robinson put the Eagles in Ferrum territory, but another interception halted the drive. The Panthers took the lead on a 61-yard pass-and-catch from Nathan Carr to Jarrod Mosby and a successful PAT made it 10-7 in favor of the visitors at the end of the first quarter.

After a Ferrum punt, Fauntleroy ran once for a six-yard gain before breaking free for a 55-yard dash to the end zone to put the Eagles back in front, 14-10, after a Jack Hendren point-after with 11:31 left in the first half.

The Panthers were forced to use a pair of timeouts early in the half and then saw their first play on the next drive go for a two-yard loss. Jahylen Lee took a hand off and lost control of the ball allowing Noah Hines to pick up the fumble and dash 21 yards for a touchdown to give Bridgewater a 21-10 lead with 10:43 on the clock.

The Eagles' defense forced a punt on the ensuing drive that went for a touchback. Bridgewater moved the ball 69 yards over the next nine plays and Hendren booted a 28-yard field goal to increase the lead to 24-10 with 3:34 left in the half.

Three drives later, Aaron Nice stepped in front of a pass and picked off a Carr attempt and ran 25 yards for a pick six - the first touchdown of his collegiate career - as the Eagles' defense scored its second touchdown of the quarter and went ahead 31-10 with two minutes still to go in the half. The score remained the same as the clock ticked away for the break.

That scoreline held until just under two minutes left in the third quarter as Fauntleroy bounced out to the left and sprinted 44 yards for a touchdown - his third of the day. The Hendren PAT was good and the Eagles took a 38-10 lead.

On the next drive, Hines came in free on a blitz and strip sacked Carr as Andrew Brown fell on the loose ball to give the Eagles possession just outside of the red zone. The quarter came to an end with the Eagles in scoring position and later saw Hendren pooch a 23-yard field goal to make it 41-10 in favor of the home team.

Ferrum threatened to score after moving the ball 48 yards in three plays, but Rhyan Day made a leaping grab for his first collegiate interception to end the threat.

The Panthers did get another touchdown on the board after a 21-yard touchdown pass from Chase Altis to Josh Powell made it 41-16 after the two-point attempt was no good. Bridgewater went on to add one more score as Robinson took the ensuing kickoff 71 yards deep into Ferrum territory. Jaylen Wood entered at quarterback and rushed twice totaling 30 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown as he spun free of a would-be tackler to find the end zone to make it 48-16.

The Eagles thought they had another touchdown as Donald Brooks II intercepted a pass and ran 39 yards for a score, but the play was called back due to an illegal block. The Eagles kneeled out the remaining clock for the 48-16 win.

Fauntleroy eclipsed the 200-yard mark again as he finished with 208 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns. The ODAC leading rusher now stands at 1,048 yards on the year and is the first BC back to reach the 1,000-yard plateau since Jacob Wright in 2014. Brady Loder added 49 yards on five touches, while Jaicere Batement had 48 yards on the ground. Wood added his 30 yards on the ground and a touchdown, while Malcolm Anderson added in 13 yards of his own. The Eagles finished with 342 yards on the ground in the win.

Bateman passed for 111 yards on nine completions, while Anderson added 44 yards on four completions, as well.

Drumgoole led all BC receivers with 54 yards on three catches, while Robinson, Montez Green and Loder all had two catches.

Defensively, Nice paced the team with 11 total tackles (three solo), including 2.0 TFL and 1.0 sacks, to go along with his pick six and a forced fumble. Shawn Harris tallied six stops with 1.0 TFLs, while Hines had five tackles, 1.0 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two pass break ups. Eli Rucker pitched in a strong game as the defensive lineman had four tackles, including 2.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks and a pair of quarterback hurries. Demarco Fleming had a QB hurry, three stops and 0.5 sacks, as well. Brown recovered a fumble and Brooks and Day each had an interception.

The Eagles are back in action next Saturday, November 4, at Washington and Lee.
