Eagles Record Two Wins in Road Tri-Match

FREDERICK Md. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team traveled to Frederick, Md. for a non-conference tri-match winning against Penn State Berks (3-0) and Hood (3-1).

Match One

THE BASICS
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Penn State Berks 0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-10)
Records: Bridgewater 19-5, Penn State Berks 5-13

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles got out to an early 6-4 lead through the first 10 points of the match with Reagan Stoop having two kills. Kylie Robinson started a run of three going on the attack to put BC up four, 11-7. Later, Bridgewater compiled a long run of seven which was capped off with a Madeline Walker service ace. The Eagles closed out the set trading points with the Nittany Lions, but Brooklyn Williams sealed the set victory on the offensive, 25-15.
  • Penn State Berks opened the second set going up 4-0, but BC responded with a run of seven to go up three. Stoop knotted the score at 10 all and was followed by Bridgewater scoring four more points to go take the lead 14-10. The Nittany Lions maintained within reach throughout the set tying the score up three times before the 20-point mark. The Eagles got help on the attack late with Faith DePew and Emerson Roper recording back-to-back kills to lead 21-19. Penn State Berks' Mackenzie Shoop tied the score at 22, but BC pulled out a 3-0 run to take the 2-0 set advantage.
  • The two teams traded points through the first seven points of the final set until Faith Shields issued a service ace to start a run of five to give Bridgewater the 9-3 advantage. The Nittany Lions started a run of six to tie the set up at nine. From that point on, the Eagles closed out the set, and match, in dominating fashion with a 16-1 run with seven of those scores coming off service aces.
MATCH STATS
  • Stoop led the way for BC ending the match with a kill/dig double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs. Brooklyn Williams recorded six kills while swinging a .556 clip while DePew picked up five.
  • Bridgewater outdid Penn State Berks 16-8 on service aces Jillian Levin had five, Shields followed with three and Grace Williams registered two.
  • Brooklyn Williams had a career day on the net picking up six blocks, while Levin racked five to earn a new personal best.
  • Ashley Rutherford ended the match with 13 assists while tying with Walker in digs with nine. Shields surpassed 400 assists on the year registering 12.
  • The Eagles swung a .230 hitting percentage compared to the Nittany Lions' -.023.
Match Two

Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Hood 1 (25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 25-12)
Records: Bridgewater 20-5, Hood 8-16

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BC led early in the set 4-3 and put together a run of four to increase the margin to five points. The Blazers bounced back within one, but a Robinson attack helped Bridgewater get to 11-7. Sophia Stites issued a service ace to get the Eagles to the 20-point mark. BC closed out the set on the attack registering five more kills to take the set 25-16.
  • The second set saw Bridgewater jump out to an early 10-5 lead until Hood recorded a run of five to tie the score. Rutherford issued a successful attack later in the match to go up two, 16-14 but the Blazers rebutted tying the score yet again. The Eagles managed a 9-2 run to take the 2-0 series lead.
  • Hood led early in the third set 7-4, but BC's DePew ended a run of four to put the team up one 8-7. Midway through the set Bridgewater took a six-point advantage, 15-9, with Robinson and Emerson Roper coming up with a huge block. Late in the set, with the Eagles up 20-17, Hood put together a run of five going up 22-20. The Blazers took the set with MacKenzie Wright service ace.
  • The final set was all BC with the team busting open to an early 6-0 advantage and was able to double it following a block by Roper and DePew 12-2. Bridgewater controlled the rest of the game leading the match by 13 points or less taking the set 25-12 and the match 3-1.
MATCH STATS
  • Stoop ended the match recording 15 kills while also recording 16 digs as well. DePew followed offensively with 11 and Rachael Meyers recorded five.
  • Rutherford picked up 21 assists and nine digs in the match followed by Shields with 11 assists.
  • Stites had a season-high five service aces on the day while also digging the ball 15 times, teammate Shields followed with four aces and DePew had two.
  • Roper had a big day on the net recording six blocks (two solo).
UP NEXT
The Eagles get a nice six-day break before heading to Arlington, Va. for a non-conference tri-match with Marywood and Marymount.
