Long Breaks Win Record, Baseball Advances to Finals Weekend

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 5 Bridgewater College baseball team swept No. 4 Washington and Lee in the first round of the ODAC tournament today advancing themselves into the final weekend of the ODAC baseball tournament next weekend.

 Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: No. 5 Bridgewater – 8, No. 4 Washington and Lee – 1
  • Records: Bridgewater (25-15); Washington and Lee (20-15)

How It Happened

  • The Eagles got on the board in the third inning and never looked back in this contest. Jarret Biesecker got on base on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch in the next at bat. Brett Tharp singled through the left side and Biesecker scored from second to give the Eagles the lead.
  • In the fourth inning the Bridgewater bats came alive and four more runs came across to score. Hunter Clever and Collin Reid singled to start the inning and Camden Herron moved them over on a sac bunt with Jonathan Sexton following that up working a walk. Jacob Grabeel then drove in Clever in the next at bat on a sac fly and Biesecker followed up Grabeel with his second hit of the day driving in Reid from third. Tharp finished off the big inning for Bridgewater with a triple that scored Biesecker putting the Eagles ahead 5-0.
  • Bridgewater scored two more times in the fifth inning. Kevin Navedo led off the inning with a double and moved to third after the next two batters put the ball in play but were called out. Camden Herron worked a walk and Sexton came up with an RBI single to score Navedo. Herron later scored in the inning on a wild pitch bringing the lead to 7-0.
  • The Generals got on the board in the bottom half of the seventh inning scoring on an error.
  • Clever drove in another run for the Eagles in the eighth. Biesecker led off the inning with a walk and Tharp followed him with a single and Clever drove in Biesecker with a double down the left field line to make it 8-1. That's all the Eagles would need to take game one winning 8-1.

Match Notes

  • Reid Long dominated on the mound pitching 7.2 innings giving up only four hits and one run. He struck out a season high nine batters and earned his record-breaking 11th win of the season. Tharp finished off the Generals with 1.1 innings.
  • Tharp also went 3-5 at the plate with two RBIs.
  • Grabeel, Sexton, Clever and Biesecker each had an RBI.

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: No. 5 Bridgewater – 9, No. 4 Washington and Lee – 8
  • Records: Bridgewater (26-15); Washington and Lee (20-16)

How It Happened

  • Washington and Lee scored three runs in the top of the first inning. After a long half inning and slow start for Bridgewater, the Eagles were able to halt the Generals attack scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jarret Biesecker and Jeffrey Snider both walked to begin the contest. Kevin Navedo drove in Biesecker and Snider on a double to right center field, 3-2 Generals after one inning.
  • The Generals scored one more run in the top of the second inning.
  • In the third, BC added one run to come within one. Snider led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error. A Hunter Clever fly out pushed Snider to third, and an RBI single from Collin Reid tied the game for the Eagles as he drove in Snider.
  • The fourth and fifth innings each saw the Eagles add one more run to their tally. Jonathan Sexton hit a solo homerun in the fourth, and Snider scored off a Clever RBI single in the fifth after he doubled to get on base. The Eagles took the lead 5-4.
  • A big sixth inning opened the game up for the Eagles sending ten different batters to the plate and scored four runs in the inning. Sexton led off with a single to start the inning and Biesecker singled to put two men on base. Brett Tharp doubled down to right field line and drove in both runners on the hit. Snider was up next and drove in Biesecker on a sac fly and pushed Tharp to second. Navedo drove in Tharp on an RBI single, and Reid followed that up with another RBI driving in Navedo on a double. Bridgewater took a commanding 9-4 lead through six frames.
  • W&L scored two runs in the eighth to make it 9-6 and two in the ninth to make it 9-8, but the Eagles held on to advance to the final weekend of the tournament.

Match Notes 

  • Clever started on the mound and went one inning. Robbie Stoss earned the win with 4.2 innings of solid work striking out four batters. Tucker Hrasky took over and pitched two innings striking out three batters and Tharp pitched the final 1.1 innings earning his 11th save.
  • Navedo went 2-5 with three RBIs.
  • Reid went 2-4 with two RBIs.
  • Biesecker went 3-4 and scored two runs.

Up Next

  • Bridgewater will travel to High Point, N.C. next weekend for the finals weekend of the ODAC tournament. The Eagles will wait to see how the seeding shakes out after the initial round is finished this weekend to see where they will be seeded and who they will be playing.
