Men's Lacrosse Ends Season in ODAC Tournament

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. --  The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team fell to the No. 7 seed, Shenandoah, in the first round of the ODAC Tournament at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 12, Shenandoah 13
  • Records: Bridgewater 10-8; Shenandoah 10-8

How It Happened

  • The Bridgewater men's lacrosse team hosted its first-ever ODAC Tournament game after claiming the No. 6 seed in the conference's postseason play. Bridgewater earned a 14-13 win against the Hornets in the first matchup in April.
  • Shenandoah scored the game's first goal at 9:18 but just moments later, Chris Martel notched an equalizer to square the game at 1-1.
  • A minute later, the Hornets struck again, and also, again, Martel matched the goal less than a minute later to tie up the contest again.
  • SU got one more in the opening quarter to take a 3-2 lead after one full period of play.
  • The second quarter was all Bridgewater as Trevor McClelland struck less than five minutes in to tie the game, 3-3, and Martel completed his hat trick 40 seconds later to give the Eagles their first lead of the day.
  • Bridgewater grew its lead after back-to-back goals from Connor McLean as the Hornets got one back under two minutes to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead at halftime.
  • BC again expanded on its lead as it scored the first three goals of the third quarter before Shenandoah struck back for a pair to close out the third. In addition, the scoring run extended to the first four goals into the fourth quarter to give the Hornets their first lead since the end of the first quarter.
  • BC used a nifty goal from Korey Polo and another strike from McLean to take an 11-10 lead, but the Hornets again went on a scoring run to go up 13-11 with less than 90 seconds to play
  • Bridgewater showed life with a goal at the 45-second mark of the final period. A sideline whistle gave Shenandah possession after the goal, and the Hornets were able to run off a majority of the final seconds.
  • Goalie Robbie Noyes caused a turnover with 20 seconds to go, and after the ensuing clear, a Hornet defenseman was able to cause another turnover to prevent a last-second shot from the Eagles to clinch the victory.
  • Shenandoah will now travel to the No. 3 seed, Roanoke, for a quarterfinal round contest tomorrow, May 3.

Match Notes

  • Martel, McLean and McClelland all recorded hat tricks in the final game of the season, while McLean and McClelland each added a pair of assists for five-point performances.
