Bridgewater Downed by Washington and Lee

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team dropped a conference matchup to Washington and Lee, 12-8, on Wednesday afternoon.

 The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 8, Washington and Lee – 12
  • Records: Bridgewater (23-14, 10-8); Washington and Lee (18-14, 12-8)

 How It Happened

  • The Generals scored one run in the top of the first, but Bridgewater answered in the bottom half of the frame scoring one run to tie the game on a Jeffrey Snider solo home run.
  • W&L scored another run in the in the second frame on a sac fly with Bridgewater again answering in the bottom half of the inning. Brandan Hartman hit a two-run home run giving BC the lead back. After an infield single from Camden Herron, Jarret Biesecker drove him in a double down the right field line putting the Eagles up by two after two innings.
  • The Generals added four runs in the top of the third, but Bridgewater fought back in the fourth adding two runs of their own to tie the game at six apiece. Jonathan Sexton led off the inning with a single to left field and scored after another extra base hit from Biesecker who tripled to right center. Brett Tharp then singled driving Biesecker home.
  • Big innings in the sixth and seventh from W&L put the Eagles away in this game. The Generals scored two in the sixth and four in the seventh to go up 12-6 after six and a half innings.
  • The Eagles inched back in the game scoring once in the bottom half of the seventh and once in the ninth. In the seventh, Sexton drove in Hunter Clever on a single down the left field line after Clever led off the inning with a single of his own. In the ninth, Clever hit a solo home run but the Eagles fell 12-8.

Match Notes

  • Clever started on the mound for BC going 2.1 innings with three strikeouts. James Swart followed with 2.1 innings, Tucker Hrasky then came in for one, Bowe Rogers for 0.2, Nick Griffin for 1.2 and Elijah Dunlap tossed one to finish the game.
  • Biesecker and Clever each went 2-5 with an RBI at the plate.
  • Sexton and Herron each had two hits of their own.

Up Next

  • After the loss, Bridgewater now sits in sixth place in the ODAC with two games remaining. Those two games will be a doubleheader against No. 6 Lynchburg this Saturday at home. Action is set for noon.
