Baseball Routs Quakers in Doubleheader Sweep

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team exploded in game one for 17 runs versus Guilford in today's doubleheader winning 17-0. The team won game two 7-5.

 Game One

 The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 17, Guilford – 0
  • Records: Bridgewater (22-13, 9-7 ODAC); Guilford (10-18, 4-12 ODAC)

 How It Happened

  • The Eagles jumped on the Quakers in game one scoring nine runs in the first inning. Jarret Biesecker led off the game with a single to center field. After a pair of walks worked by Brett Tharp and Jeffrey Snider, the Eagles were in business with the bases loaded. Hunter Clever then worked another walk to bring in a run to kick off the big inning. Collin Reid singled to left center to start off his big day driving in two runs. The Eagles worked two more walks with Brandan Hartman walking to load the bases for Jacob Grabeel who also walked to drive in another run. Camden Herron singled to right to drive in two more Eagles. Bridgewater made it through the line up once and Snider came back up to the plate, he singled to right field to drive in Herron and Navedo followed that up with a sac fly giving BC a 9-0 lead after one frame.
  • Bridgewater scored once more in the second and third innings. Hartman led off the second with a single to center field and would eventually score on a wild pitch. The third inning would be more of the same with Clever scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Reid drove in two more runs for BC in the fourth earning his fourth runs batted in of the game. Biesecker and Snider scored on the single to left field to give the team a 13-0 lead.
  • In the sixth three more walks loaded the bases for Hartman. The sophomore also walked, and Tharp scored on the play. Grabeel followed up with an RBI single to right center, 16-0 Eagles.
  • The rout was topped off by Ben Anderson's first collegiate home run, a solo shot to right field in the eighth.

 Match Notes

  • Reid Long tossed seven innings on the mound striking out four batters. Long is now 9-1 this season with decisions in every start thus far. Elijah Dunlap finished off the Quakers with two hitless innings and striking out two batters.
  • Reid had a massive game offensively for BC, he went 3-5 with four RBIs and scored a run.
  • Herron went 2-5 with two RBIs and also scored a run.
  • Snider, Navedo, Clever, Hartman and Anderson each had one RBI.

 Game Two

 The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 7, Guilford – 5
  • Records: Bridgewater (23-13, 10-7 ODAC); Guilford (10-19, 4-13 ODAC)

 How It Happened

  • In game two of the doubleheader, Guilford took the lead scoring one run in the third to go up 1-0.
  • BC fought back in the bottom half of the frame scoring two runs. Jonathan Sexton led off the inning with a double to left field. Jarret Biesecker reached on an error and Sexton moved to third. Brett Tharp laid down a sacrifice bunt to drive in Sexton giving the Eagles their first run. Later in the inning, Kevin Navedo drove in Biesecker on an RBI single.
  • The Quakers tied the contest in the fourth inning at two in the top half of the frame. In the bottom half, BC regained the lead on an RBI single from Sexton that drove in Collin Reid after he worked a walk.
  • The Eagles added to their lead in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Camden Herron. Clever came around to score from third on the play.
  • Guilford tied up the contest in the top of the seventh inning at four all.
  • Bridgewater needed one big hit in the contest to put away the Quakers and got two of them in the bottom of the seventh. After base hits from Biesecker and Snider, Navedo came up in a big spot. The senior came through and singled to right field to drive in Biesecker to give BC the lead back. The Eagles tacked on two insurance runs with another hit from Reid. Reid singled to left field to drive in Navedo and Snider on his second hit of the contest to give the team a 7-4 lead.
  • Guilford scored once in the eighth but couldn't rally back and the Eagles won to sweep the weekend series.

 Match Notes

  • Waring Garber started on the mound and pitched 3.2 innings with six strike outs. James Swart relieved Garber and pitched 2.1 innings. Tharp finished the game on the mound and earned the win.
  • Reid again was excellent at the dish getting on base all three at bats he had. The junior went 2-3 with a walk and two RBIs while also scoring a run.
  • Navedo had a bounce back game going 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored with a clutch go-ahead-hit in the seventh.

 Up Next

  • The Eagles are now 23-13 this season with a 10-7 conference record. They'll host Washington and Lee on Wednesday, April 27 with action set for 4 p.m.
