Eagles Victorious in Senior Day Showdown with Shenandoah

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse held on for a 14-13 victory against Shenandoah in a piviotal ODAC showdown on Senior Day at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the game, the Eagles honored 11 seniors: Alex Schwind, Connor McLean, Trent Cheyney, Eric Leasner, Robbie Noyes, Grayson Rech, Sam Homick, Chris Martel, Joshua Huffman and Ryan Ashpole. The team and the department of athletics thanks each player and their families for all the hard work and dedication over the last four years.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 14, Shenandoah 13
  • Records: Bridgewater 10-5, 5-3 ODAC; Shenandoah 9-5, 4-3 ODAC

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater scored the game's first goal nearly five minutes into the game as Martel was fed a pass from Hunter Becker, 1-0.
  • Martel added his second of the game, this time from Mclean with 6:50 on the clock.
  • The Hornets scored two goals over the next two minuts to tie the game, but a Mclean goal with under 20 seconds left in the quarter pushed the lead back in favor of BC at 3-2 after one quarter.
  • McLean added to the lead off a pass from Martel 90 seconds into the second quarter, 4-2, before SU tied the game again after back-to-back goals with 10 minutes to go in the half.
  • Martel notched his 60th goal of the eason with an assist to Homick with nine minutes in the second quarter, but Shenandoah tied the contest again just two minutes later.
  • Becker and Cheyney went back-to-back to push the Eagles back in front, 7-5, before each side traded goals, including a score from Colby Smith with two seconds left in the half as BC held an 8-6 lead at the break.
  • McLean and Martel connected again with 10 minutes to go in the third quarter to make the score 9-6, but a man-up goal for the Hornets trimmed the deficit back to two goals.
  • Another goal from SU made it a 9-8 lead for the Eagles before McLean scored his fourth goal of the day with just 10 seconds to go to give BC a two-goal advantage heading into the final period.
  • The fourth quarter started off all Bridgewater as Martel tallied another goal and Trevor McClelland netted a pair of goals to give the Eagles a 13-8 lead.
  • A Hornet goal cut the lead back to four goals before Eddie Ross IV tallied his second collegiate goal in what proved to be the game winning score with 6:05 on the clock. Shenandoah scored the game's next four goals over the last four and a half minutes, but it was not enough as the Eagles held on for victory.

Match Notes

  • Martel and McLean each finished with four goals and two assists, while Martel grabbed three ground balls and McLean picked up two.
  • McClelland stepped up for a two-goal performance, while Cheyney registered a goal, an assist and thee ground balls. 
  • Rech caused a pair of turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
  • Gabriel Alexander went 18-of-25 at the faceoff X and picked up a game-high 15 ground balls, while Samuel Sharps won three of five faceoffs and had one ground ball.
  • Noyes became just the second goalie to get credit for 10 wins in a single-season in a fantastic Senior Day performance. Noyes stopped 18 shots in all 60 minutes between the pipes as he now sits second in program history with 356 saves. He is one win shy of tying the team's career goalie win mark (19, Andrew Buss, 2013-18). He also accredited for two ground balls.
  • Both teams recorded 50 shots, while Bridgewater held a 44-30 advantage in ground balls. Each side scored one goal in man-up situations.

Up Next

  • The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, April 20, for an ODAC contest against the top team in the ODAC this season, Washington and Lee, which received votes in the last USILA Coaches Poll. The game is set to begin at 7 pm under the lights at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
